Project Manager (Railheads & Track Installation)

The Project

HS2 has appointed Ferrovial Construction and BAM Nuttall JV (FBJV) to deliver almost 140 miles of track infrastructure between London and the West Midlands, including design, construction, logistics, testing and commissioning of an integrated track solution and the Infrastructure Maintenance Depot at Calvert.

The Role

The Railheads & Track Installation Project Manager will be responsible for the safe, efficient and commercially successful delivery of railhead infrastructure and track installation works across the Lot 3 Birmingham Spur. The role will lead project delivery from planning through to handover, ensuring compliance with contractual and technical requirements while achieving safety, programme, cost, quality and environmental targets.

Location: Birmingham (Lot 3 Track North). This position requires full-time attendance at JV offices in Birmingham and regular presence along the route to support project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the safe, efficient and commercially successful delivery of railhead infrastructure and track installation works from mobilisation through to completion and handover.
  • Establish and maintain the project execution strategy, delivery plan and governance arrangements.
  • Manage the delivery of railhead infrastructure, slab track, ballastless track systems, S&C installations and associated civil engineering works.
  • Ensure adequate resources, plant, materials, systems and competent personnel are in place to achieve project objectives.
  • Oversee project performance against safety, programme, cost, quality and environmental requirements, implementing corrective actions where required.
  • Develop, maintain and deliver the integrated project programme, ensuring effective coordination across design, procurement, construction, logistics, testing and commissioning activities.
  • Lead the commercial and contractual management of the project, including forecasting, change management, compensation events, variations and financial performance.
  • Lead the procurement, mobilisation and performance management of subcontractors and suppliers.
  • Act as the principal point of contact with HS2, designers, delivery partners, suppliers and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage interfaces between railhead operations, track installation, logistics, civil works, railway systems and commissioning activities to support efficient project delivery.
  • Provide visible leadership and ensure compliance with legal requirements, HS2 standards, CDM Regulations and JV procedures.
  • Ensure works are delivered in accordance with approved designs, specifications, quality standards and assurance requirements.
  • Lead testing, commissioning, completion and handover activities, ensuring all documentation and assurance records are completed and accepted.
  • Establish and maintain effective risk, opportunity, issue and change management processes.
  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary project team, promoting collaboration, accountability, high performance and the JV''s values and behaviours.

Key skills and experience

-Proven experience delivering major rail infrastructure, track systems or complex civil engineering projects.

-Demonstrable experience holding overall responsibility for project safety, programme, cost, quality and commercial performance.

-Strong understanding of rail and track construction, including slab track, ballastless track, conventional track and S&C installations.

-Experience leading multidisciplinary teams and managing complex technical, operational and stakeholder interfaces.

-Proven ability to manage subcontractors, suppliers and specialist designers throughout the project lifecycle.

-Strong knowledge of project planning, project controls, forecasting, risk management and change control.

-Sound commercial and contractual knowledge, including NEC contracts, variations, compensation events and subcontract management.

-Ability to interpret contractual requirements, technical specifications, Works Information and project procedures.

-Strong leadership, communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.

-Ability to make informed decisions and manage competing priorities within a complex, highly regulated project environment.

Desirable Qualifications & Experience

-Degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related discipline.

-Chartered status or membership of an appropriate professional institution.

-Recognised project management qualification (APM, PRINCE2 or equivalent).

-Experience working on HS2, Network Rail or other major rail infrastructure programmes.

-Knowledge of rail logistics, possession planning, testing, commissioning, handover and railway operational interfaces.
