Due to an established pipeline of secured work and the need to strengthen their project delivery team in the South West, my client is looking to appoint a Project Manager or Assistant Project Manager to oversee a portfolio of fencing and minor civils projects on behalf of Network Rail.
The business is an established infrastructure contractor delivering works across England and have secured a long-term rail fencing framework, providing excellent workload visibility and stability for the successful candidate.
The contract covers the railway network from Weston-super-Mare to Penzance, including the associated branch lines, and involves delivering approximately £1.2m - £1.4m of works annually across 30-50 individual sites. Projects are typically valued between £20,000 and £40,000 and consist primarily of lineside fencing replacement, vegetation clearance and associated minor civils activities.
The works are process-driven, with the successful candidate responsible for coordinating multiple smaller projects rather than managing one large construction site. Most activities take place lineside without the requirement for line blockages or direct track access, although third-party access arrangements and site-specific constraints will need to be managed.
This position would suit an organised and proactive Project Manager who enjoys managing multiple workstreams and taking responsibility for projects from initial planning through to completion and handover.
My client would also consider an Assistant Project Manager, Construction Manager or experienced Site Manager looking to progress into project management. Previous fencing experience is not essential, and candidates with experience delivering minor civils works within rail or highways frameworks are particularly encouraged to apply.
As Project Manager / Assistant Project Manager, your duties will include:
·Managing a portfolio of approximately 30-50 fencing and minor civils projects annually, with a combined value of £1.2m - £1.4m
·Taking responsibility for the successful delivery of projects from initial planning and mobilisation through to completion, snagging and client handover
·Developing and maintaining delivery programmes and schedules across multiple sites
·Coordinating and managing approximately 2-3 operational teams working across different locations simultaneously
·Planning labour requirements and ensuring appropriate resources are available to meet programme commitments
·Managing the ordering and coordination of materials, plant and equipment, with support from the wider team
·Reviewing and amending existing work package plans, task briefings and associated site documentation to reflect specific site hazards and requirements
·Managing site access arrangements, including third-party land access where required
·Liaising directly with Network Rail representatives, clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders to ensure smooth project delivery
·Coordinating site activities including vegetation clearance, fencing installation and associated minor civils works
·Monitoring project progress and responding to programme changes, access restrictions, weather conditions and unforeseen site constraints
·Ensuring operational teams have the necessary materials, equipment, access arrangements and documentation before commencing works
·Overseeing health, safety and quality standards across all sites
·Managing project completion, client handovers and any outstanding snagging works
·Attending regular internal resource planning meetings and client progress meetings
·Ensuring multiple projects are delivered efficiently, safely and in accordance with agreed programmes
Requirements:
·Previous experience working as a Project Manager, Assistant Project Manager, Construction Manager or Site Manager within the construction or infrastructure sector
·A background in minor civils, rail infrastructure, highways maintenance or framework delivery
·Experience managing multiple smaller projects or workstreams simultaneously, rather than solely delivering one large construction project
·Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities, labour resources and delivery programmes
·Experience coordinating site teams, subcontractors, materials and plant
·A practical, site-focused approach to project management, ideally developed through a site management or construction delivery background
·A full UK driving licence
·Previous experience delivering works within a Network Rail framework would be advantageous but is not essential
·CSCS and SMSTS qualifications would be beneficial but are not mandatory
·PTS certification would be advantageous, although training can be provided
My client is particularly interested in candidates who have progressed through a site management route and understand the practical challenges of delivering construction works across multiple locations. They are not necessarily looking for someone with extensive experience managing major infrastructure schemes, but rather an individual who is organised, reliable and comfortable taking ownership of a busy programme of smaller projects.
For candidates who are not yet operating at Project Manager level, the business is willing to consider an Assistant Project Manager or experienced Site Manager who demonstrates the right attitude and potential. Training and support can be provided, making this an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their career.
This is an excellent opportunity to join an established infrastructure contractor with a substantial secured workload and long-term framework commitments. The successful candidate will benefit from a high degree of autonomy, a varied portfolio of projects and the opportunity to develop their career within rail infrastructure delivery.
