Project Engineer

This role involves travel to Plymouth and offers a full-time, permanent engagement for an individual experienced in hydro-mechanical systems, particularly penstock and valve integration.

The successful candidate will blend design, calculation, specification writing, and on-site engineering support.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and integration of penstocks, valves, gates, and associated hydro-mechanical equipment
  • Carry out structural and hydraulic calculations, including thrust block and leakage analysis
  • Prepare and review general arrangement drawings, fabrication details, and installation drawings
  • Produce technical specifications, scope documents, and project reports
  • Support procurement by reviewing supplier designs and documentation
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards, codes, and project requirements
  • Create accurate 2D/3D models and drawings using CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Inventor, or similar)
  • Manage drawing revisions and contribute to design reviews
  • Liaise with internal teams, suppliers, and contractors to ensure buildability and quality
  • Provide engineering support during manufacturing, installation, and commissioning
  • Site work, conducting inspections, surveys, and problem-solving


Job Requirements:


Essential skills and experience:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related discipline
  • Ideally have experience with hydro-mechanical systems (penstocks, valves, or similar)
  • Competency in thrust and leakage calculations
  • Proficiency in drafting and 3D modelling software
  • Experience in specification writing and technical reporting
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Willingness and flexibility to work off-site as required


Desirable skills:

  • Familiarity with hydro, water, or infrastructure projects
  • Experience liaising directly with fabricators and installation teams
  • Knowledge of relevant design standards (BS, EN, or equivalent)

  • Strong communicator, able to bridge technical and site-based teams
  • Self-motivated, adaptable, and committed to delivering quality outcomes
