Due to continued growth and an increasing project pipeline, our client are looking to strengthen their engineering team with an additional engineering professional who is eager to take ownership of complex projects and build a long-term career within the business. This is an excellent opportunity for a Project Design Engineer to work on bespoke plant layouts, conveyor systems and process equipment, helping deliver innovative solutions for customers across a wide range of industries.

The Role

As a Project Design Engineer, reporting to the Engineering Manager, you will take ownership of projects from concept through to design, manufacture, installation and commissioning. This is a varied position combining design engineering, project delivery and customer interaction.

A typical day could include:

  • Creating 2D and 3D general arrangement drawings using SolidWorks and AutoCAD
  • Developing plant layouts that integrate conveyors, screens, shredders, optical sorters and associated equipment
  • Producing detailed manufacturing drawings and releasing designs to production
  • Creating and managing Bills of Materials through the company MRP system
  • Working closely with Sales, Manufacturing and Project Management teams to optimise designs and project outcomes
  • Liaising directly with customers and suppliers to ensure projects meet expectations
  • Conducting site visits for surveys, measurements, installation support and commissioning activities
  • Producing technical documentation, operating manuals and product specifications
  • Identifying opportunities to improve designs, processes, efficiency and cost-effectiveness
  • Supporting project delivery through testing, commissioning and customer handover

Requirements


We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive engineer with strong technical design capabilities and a passion for delivering high-quality solutions.

Essential skills and experience:

To be considered for this role. applicants are required to have the following

  • Proven experience using SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent 3D CAD software
  • Experience producing detailed manufacturing and assembly drawings
  • Knowledge of the make-to-order design process
  • Experience creating and managing Bills of Materials
  • Strong project management and organisational skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple priorities
  • Innovative problem-solving approach with a continuous improvement mindset
  • Strong IT skills and experience using ERP/MRP systems
  • Flexible, dependable and able to work effectively within a team

Advantageous experience:

  • Designing special purpose machinery
  • Previous experience of working on projects for Conveyor systems, materials handling equipment and recycling plant or waste processing equipment
  • Knowledge of hydraulics and electrical systems
  • the ability to use AI and automation tools within engineering design

This would be an ideal opportunity for someone who has been a Design Engineer, or Mechanical Design Engineer within manufacturing, materials handling, recycling equipment or special-purpose machinery environment.
