Project Building Surveyor

Location: Across NCG Colleges
Reporting to: Head of Capital Projects

Shape the spaces where people learn, work and thrive

Are you an experienced Building Surveyor looking for a role where your expertise can make a real difference? Join NCG’s Estates and Facilities team and help shape, improve and maintain the environments in which our students and staff learn and work every day.

As Project Building Surveyor, you’ll play a key role in delivering a diverse programme of refurbishment, maintenance and improvement projects across our college estate. You’ll be involved from the earliest concept and survey stages through to design, procurement, contract management and completion.

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically skilled and motivated professional who enjoys managing projects, solving building challenges and seeing ideas become reality.

What you’ll do

You’ll manage and support a range of building projects, ensuring they are delivered safely, efficiently, on time and within budget. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing small to medium-sized refurbishment, maintenance and space adaptation projects from inception to completion.
  • Carrying out building surveys and condition assessments, diagnosing defects and preparing technical reports and schedules of condition.
  • Preparing design specifications, tender documentation and drawings, working with architects, engineers and contractors.
  • Providing early-stage cost estimates to support budget setting and capital business cases.
  • Acting as contract administrator, managing tender processes, contractor appointments and contract performance.
  • Monitoring project costs and ensuring value for money throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Ensuring projects comply with building regulations, health and safety, fire safety, accessibility and environmental requirements.
  • Working with internal teams, including academic faculties and student services, to understand their needs and deliver effective solutions.
  • Managing relationships with consultants, contractors and regulatory bodies.
  • Supporting planned preventative maintenance and the long-term sustainability of the estate.
  • Promoting energy efficiency, sustainable materials and low-carbon solutions.

You’ll also have responsibility for one direct report, providing an opportunity to support and develop others within the wider Estates and Facilities team.

About you

We’re looking for an experienced Building Surveyor with strong technical knowledge, excellent project management skills and the ability to build effective relationships with a wide range of people.

You’ll have:

  • A degree in Building Surveying, Construction or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in building surveying, ideally within a large estate or public sector environment.
  • Experience managing building projects from inception through to completion.
  • Strong knowledge of UK building regulations, construction legislation and health and safety standards.
  • Experience of contract administration and managing contractors and consultants.
  • Experience of early-stage cost estimating.
  • Strong knowledge of building construction, materials and maintenance practices.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and other design software.
  • Excellent organisational, analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Financial awareness and experience of budgeting and cost control.
  • A genuine commitment to sustainability and energy-efficient building practices.

Professional membership of RICS, or working towards membership, is highly desirable, as is evidence of relevant CPD.

Why join us?

This is more than a surveying role. You’ll have the opportunity to make a tangible difference to NCG’s built environment and directly influence the quality of spaces used by students and staff.

Working as part of our Estates and Facilities team, you’ll contribute to the continuous improvement of the college estate while supporting our strategic and sustainability goals.

If you’re ready to bring your expertise, take ownership of exciting projects and help create better places to learn and work, we’d love to hear from you.

NCG is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff to share this commitment.
