Production Coordinator
Production Co-ordinator
Chadderton, Oldham (OL9) | Office based | Full-time, Permanent
£29,500 per annum
Do you understand that purchasing and production in engineering isn't just about raising orders and pushing paper? If a material delivery is going to hold up a job, are you the person who spots it, picks up the phone and finds a solution? If so, we want to hear from you.
We're working with a well-established precision engineering and fabrication business in Chadderton that's looking for a capable, commercially minded Production Co-ordinator to take real ownership of its day-to-day buying and production-office function.
This is a hands-on role making sure the engineers and workshop have the right materials, components and subcontract services — at the right price, at the right time — while keeping the production office running smoothly behind them. You'll work closely with the engineering, production and management teams, developing supplier relationships and helping the business get better control over costs, lead times and material availability.
The Role
No two days will be the same. You'll be:
- Purchasing raw materials for machining and fabrication (steels, stainless, aluminium and other engineering materials)
- Sourcing engineering components, tooling and consumables
- Obtaining and comparing supplier quotes, challenging pricing and negotiating where appropriate
- Raising purchase orders and keeping purchasing records accurate and up to date
- Expediting orders and chasing suppliers to keep jobs moving through the workshop
- Responding quickly when urgent materials are needed for breakdowns and time-critical work
- Buying and co-ordinating subcontract services such as specialist machining, heat treatment, coatings and finishing
- Monitoring material and subcontract costs against individual jobs
- Building strong supplier relationships while identifying more competitive alternatives
- Monitoring supplier performance on cost, quality, reliability and delivery
- Resolving shortages, incorrect deliveries, certification issues and invoice queries
- Supporting stock control and making sure commonly used materials are available when required
- General production-office administration — inputting job planning onto the system, answering phones, filing, scanning and maintaining job-related documents
What You'll Need
- Purchasing, procurement or buying experience within engineering, manufacturing or fabrication
- A good understanding of engineering materials and components, and the ability to read material specifications
- Confidence dealing with suppliers and negotiating on price and lead time
- Strong organisational skills and the ability to juggle multiple live requirements
- Good commercial awareness and an eye for reducing costs
- Experience using purchasing, stock control or ERP/MRP systems, and good MS Office skills
Experience buying materials and subcontract services for precision machining and fabrication would be a real advantage.
What's On Offer
- £29,500 per annum
- Full-time, permanent role
- Hours: Monday to Thursday 08.30–17.00, Friday 08.30–16.00
- 33 days' holiday (including statutory)
- The chance to take genuine ownership of the production and purchasing function in a growing, fast-moving engineering business
