Are you a dynamic leader and legal expert with a keen interest in social care£ We''re seeking a Principal Solicitor to head a specialist legal team within a London local authority, focusing on Children’s and Adults’ Social Care.

Role Overview:
You will play a vital part in both strategic and operational decisions—leading 7–10 staff, managing complex, sensitive cases, and driving continuous improvement in legal services. Your advice and support will reach senior managers, committees, and partner agencies, enabling delivery of the council’s priorities and safeguarding interests.

Core Responsibilities:

- Take lead on all Social Care legal matters including contentious litigation, advice, and policy for Children’s and Adults’ services.
- Oversee and direct casework, ensuring compliance with statutory deadlines and regulatory standards.
- Mentor, supervise and develop your team, promoting a professional and inclusive culture.
- Drive service improvement initiatives, process changes, and foster a customer-centric approach.
- Manage resources and budgets efficiently to ensure value for money and financial viability.
- Liaise closely with other departments—balancing competing interests to deliver effective counsel.
- Maintain LEXCEL standards with regular work review, quality assurance, and supervision.
- Advise senior figures within the authority and at committee meetings, representing the council externally where needed.
- Build strong relationships with the judiciary, actively engaging with local courts and judicial forums.
- Contribute to digital transformation, information management compliance, and agile/flexible working.
- Support corporate needs in emergencies, health and safety, climate action, and safeguarding.

About You:

- Qualified Solicitor
- Broad experience in Social Care litigation, policy, and advisory work.
- Leadership credentials, with proven ability to manage, motivate and develop staff.
- Strategic thinker, able to advise on council policy and navigate complex casework across departments.
- Dedicated to driving inclusive, ethical and high-quality standards in service delivery.
