Primary Teacher – Specialist SEMH Provision

Are you a passionate Primary Teacher looking for a rewarding role where you can make a genuine difference to the lives of young people?

We are seeking an outstanding Primary qualified teacher to join a specialist nurture provision within a secondary school. This is a unique opportunity to work with students aged 11–18 who have complex Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a highly therapeutic, relationship-based environment.

This is not a traditional secondary teaching role. The school are intentionally seeking a Primary-trained teacher who is confident delivering a broad, highly differentiated curriculum while placing equal importance on emotional wellbeing, behaviour regulation and student engagement.

The Role

Working within a specialist nurture provision, you will support students through a flexible, personalised approach to learning. You will build strong, trusting relationships, helping young people overcome barriers to education while delivering engaging learning experiences tailored to individual needs.

The provision supports a mixed-age cohort from Year 8 through to Post-16 (ages 11–18). Students are working across a wide range of academic levels rather than following a single key stage curriculum, making the ability to adapt teaching to individual needs essential.

Classes are deliberately kept small, typically 5–7 students, with dedicated Teaching Assistant support in every class. Many students also receive 1:1 support, meaning you will work collaboratively with a team of professionals to provide the best possible outcomes for every learner.

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Qualified Teacher Status (Primary)
  • Excellent emotional resilience and the ability to remain calm, consistent and compassionate under pressure
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour
  • The ability to build safe, trusting relationships with students who may have experienced trauma, attachment difficulties or emotional dysregulation
  • Confidence in delivering a broad, differentiated curriculum to small groups working at a range of academic levels
  • The ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and respond effectively to behavioural and emotional needs
  • A flexible, solution-focused approach to teaching and learning
  • Strong communication skills, including experience using de-escalation techniques and restorative approaches

Desirable experience:

  • SEMH, SEND, nurture or alternative provision settings
  • Working within multidisciplinary teams
  • Following and implementing individual behaviour support and therapeutic plans

This role requires exceptional emotional intelligence, patience and consistency. It is ideally suited to a teacher who is motivated by supporting vulnerable young people to achieve success both academically and personally, rather than someone seeking a traditional classroom-based teaching position.

Contract Information

This is a full-time position available immediately, although we recognise the timing of the recruitment process and are happy to consider candidates who are available to start in September.

The role is offered on a temporary basis while permanent recruitment takes place. For the right candidate, there may be the opportunity to secure a permanent position in the future; however, this would be subject to approval and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

If you are committed to making a lasting impact through nurturing relationships, high expectations and adaptable teaching, we would love to hear from you.
