Salary: Up to £75,000 + 10% bonus
Location: West London
Hybrid: 3 days per week in the office 
Payroll: Approx. 5,000 employees + weekly temporary workers
Team: 6 direct reports

The Role

A senior opportunity for an experienced UK Payroll Manager to lead a large, complex in-house payroll operation covering approximately 5,000 employees.

You’ll take ownership of operational payroll delivery while leading and developing a team of six, ensuring strong controls, compliance and service standards. This role needs a strong UK payroll leader rather than a predominantly global payroll background.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee accurate end-to-end delivery of a high-volume UK payroll.
• Lead, coach and develop a team of 6 payroll professionals.
• Manage payroll controls, reconciliations, BACS and year-end activities including P60s, P11Ds and PSA.
• Act as the escalation point for complex payroll issues.
• Ensure compliance with UK payroll legislation, tax, NI, pensions and statutory payments.
• Lead payroll system upgrades, testing and technical changes.
• Drive process improvements, automation and stronger payroll controls.
• Manage audits, HMRC reviews and compliance activities.
• Produce payroll reporting and MI, identifying trends, risks and variances.
• Partner closely with HR, Reward, Finance and HR Systems.

Ideal Candidate

• Significant UK in-house payroll management experience is essential.
• Experience managing large, complex payrolls – ideally several thousand employees.
• Proven experience leading and developing a sizeable payroll team.
• Excellent knowledge of UK payroll legislation and compliance.
• Strong payroll systems experience – ResourceLink highly advantageous, although experience with other large-scale systems will be considered.
• Experience with payroll projects, systems changes and process improvement.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• Retail experience would be advantageous but is not essential.
• CIPP qualification or equivalent desirable.
