Paediatric HDU Ward Manager

OverviewThe Sister/Charge Nurse will be responsible for the daily clinical and operational management of the paediatric clinical areas and the professional development of staff within those areas. They will provide leadership and support to all staff and work in partnership with multi-disciplinary teams. They will develop best practice and ensure consistency across the paediatric unit, and provide senior nursing cover for the paediatric unit in collaboration with the relevant senior nursing team and Modern Matrons.
Responsibilities
Act as a clinical expert within the Paediatric speciality while delivering high levels of direct patient care.
Resolve patient/parent complaints relating to clinical care or operational issues within the area.
Coordinate safeguarding referrals/concerns, liaising with other multidisciplinary team members.
Maintain appropriate staffing levels within set budgets and identify resource/staffing issues in advance.
Provide 24-hour nursing service for the clinical area with effective leadership and management.
Manage the allocated budget and deliver savings and efficiencies in line with the trust’s objectives.
Develop ward/unit policies and guidelines and ensure implementation and audit for compliance and best practice.
Participate or lead in the development and communication of Ward/Department policies and guidelines.
Lead or participate in investigations of complaints, incidents and other events under direction of the Paediatric Matron and implement required actions.
Take allocated leadership responsibilities as instructed by the Paediatric Matron.

Clinical responsibilities
Lead on assessing, planning and implementing high-quality care and evaluating care options in line with Trust values and objectives.
Lead complex clinical care for patients within the area and ensure safe custody, maintenance and administration of medication per Trust policy.
Promote a safe environment, comply with infection control, health and safety legislation, and Trust policies and objectives.
Coordinate discharges and transfers, promoting timely and safe processes.
Ensure effective patient flow and bed management; deliver high-quality end-of-life care in line with national pathways.
Provide evidence-based clinical advice as required, understand escalation procedures, and participate in clinical governance and safeguarding activities.
Undertake multidisciplinary collaboration and coordinate specialist functions as appropriate.
Monitor quality of care in line with CQC and Trust objectives; contribute to data collection on quality indicators.
Maintain a safe working environment and promote patient safety, including falls prevention.
Professional responsibilities
Maintain professional behaviour and promote a positive image of the Trust; participate in setting nursing standards with the multidisciplinary team.
Practice in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and relevant guidelines; ensure staff understand policy and procedures.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with data protection requirements; ensure accurate documentation.
Be aware of Clinical Governance and participate in audits and quality improvement locally and within the Trust.
Assist in ensuring infection control measures are implemented and monitored.
Be capable of working full shift patterns including rotation, nights, weekends and bank holidays as relevant to the area.
Qualifications and experience
Essential
– Degree; Registered Nurse on NMC registers; senior level within paediatrics (RSCN/RN Child) or equivalent; evidence of ongoing professional development; mentorship/teaching/assessing course; post-qualification in relevant specialty (PHDU or PICU).
Experience
– Proven clinical experience in relevant area; experience with acutely ill patients; demonstrable teaching/assessing experience; recent experience with children with elevated dependency needs; general management skills.
Skills and knowledge
– Strong clinical skills; knowledge of NMC Code; knowledge of child development; awareness of NHS issues; child protection awareness and pathways; infection control knowledge; strong communication skills; ability to work with multidisciplinary teams; ability to prioritise and work with minimal supervision; capacity to support junior colleagues.
Desirable
– Awareness of NHS reforms related to specialty.
