Optics Technician

OPTICS TECHNICIAN REQUIRED, ORPINGTON

My client based in Orpington are looking for an Optics Tech to join their growing team. Roughing and Polishing is responsible for shaping, smoothing, and finishing optical components such as lenses, prisms, and mirrors. This role requires precision, dexterity, and expertise in manual and machine-assisted polishing techniques to meet strict optical quality standards.

Key Responsibilities:

• Rough grind optical components to approximate shape using abrasives and precision tools.
• Polish lenses, mirrors, and prisms to achieve optical-grade surface finish.
• Measure surface quality, curvature, and flatness using interferometers, spherometers, and other optical metrology tools.
• Inspect components for defects, scratches, or surface irregularities.
• Maintain and calibrate polishing and grinding equipment.
• Document processes, times, and results for quality control and traceability.
• Collaborate with engineers and technicians to meet design specifications.
• Follow safety protocols for chemicals, abrasives, and laser testing.

Required Qualifications for the Optics Technician role:

• High school diploma or technical certificate in Optics, Physics, Materials Science, or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on experience in optical grinding and polishing.
• Understanding of surface quality, tolerances, and optical specifications.
• Ability to read optical drawings and follow precise instructions.
• Attention to detail and strong manual dexterity

Preferred Skills:

• Experience with automated polishing machines.
• Knowledge of lens coating processes.
• Familiarity with optical testing methods (interferometry, profilometry).

Physical Requirements:

• Fine motor skills for delicate handling of optical components.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and handle small tools safely.

This position is working Monday to Friday 7am - 3:30pm
