You don’t need to come from signage. If you’ve spent your time in sheet metal, engineering, manufacturing or a similar fabrication environment, that’s absolutely fine. What matters is that you can look at a drawing, understand what needs making and get on with producing it properly. Your experience MIG welding is the big one here. Ideally, you’ll have around four years’ experience across MIG welding and fabrication, with aluminium experience particularly useful. You’ll be confident measuring, cutting, folding and bending sheet metal, as well as welding, riveting and bolting finished components together. Being able to read technical drawings is important. If you’ve used press brakes, guillotines, bandsaws and general fabrication tools along the way, even better. If you happen to have signage experience as well, brilliant, but it’s definitely not essential.
