Mechanical Plumbing & Heating Engineer
Nelson Permanent Placements are recruiting for a Building Services mobile Mechanical Plumbing & Heating Engineerto work mobile on live purpose built-student accomodation-around Newcastle, the surrounding area and ocassionaly Scotland
The role is delivering planned preventive maintenance, reactive repairs, statutory compliance and small works.- You will keep heating, hot water and cold water running reliably for hundreds of tenants. Playing a key part in water hygiene compliance
- Key responsibilities
- Carry out PPM on plant room equipment to SFG20 schedules, plate heat exchangers, calorifiers and cylinders, pumps, pressurisation units, cold water booster sets, expansion vessels, valves and strainers. Diagnose and repair reactive faults on heating, domestic hot water and cold water systems within contracted response times, including loss of heating or hot water across whole buildings.
- Maintain and repair unvented hot water systems, including safety devices, in line with G3 requirements. Service, repair and replace components on communal heating and hot water systems, including HIUs, district heating interfaces and pump sets.
- Carry out water hygiene tasks in line with ACOP L8 and HSG274, including temperature monitoring, TMV servicing, shower head cleaning and descaling, flushing of little-used outlets, and cold water storage tank inspections. Undertake general commercial plumbing including leaks, drainage, sanitaryware, valves and pipework in copper, steel, press-fit and plastic systems.
- Carry out system draining, refilling, venting, chemical dosing and pressure testing, and support water treatment regimes. Assist with plant replacement, upgrades and commissioning on small works and projects.
- Record all work accurately and in real time on the mobile job management / CAFM system, including asset data, readings, photographs, defects and parts used, so that compliance records are audit-ready. Identify and report remedial works, producing clear defect descriptions and, where requested, supporting the preparation of quotations for additional works.
- Work safely under HPS safe systems of work, including RAMS, permits to work, safe isolation and lock-out/tag-out, and complete dynamic risk assessments on site.
- Liaise professionally with client site teams, residents and other contractors, recognising that sites are occupied residential buildings and minimising disruption to students.
- Keep the company vehicle, tools and test equipment in good, calibrated and presentable condition, and manage van stock responsibly.
- Qualifications and experience: essential
- NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Plumbing and Heating or Mechanical Engineering Services.
- G3 Unvented Hot Water Systems certification.
- Proven experience maintaining commercial plant rooms, including boilers, pumps, pressurisation units, booster sets and calorifiers.
- Full UK driving licence (company van provided).
- CSCS / ECS / JIB or equivalent skills card (or willingness to obtain). Right to work in the UK and willingness to undergo a DBS check (roles involve working in occupied student residences).
- Qualifications and experience: desirable
- Commercial Gas Safe registration (e.g. COCN1, CDGA1, TPCP1A, ICPN1) or willingness to work towards it with HPS support.
- Experience of HIUs and communal or district heating systems in PBSA or residential blocks.
- City & Guilds water hygiene / Legionella control qualification. Water Regulations (WRAS) qualification or demonstrable knowledge.
- Legionella awareness, with a working knowledge of ACOP L8 and HSG274 control measures.
- Confined spaces training, IPAF or PASMA.
- Basic electrical fault-finding on plant (e.g. pump and boiler controls) with safe isolation. Previous experience in a multi-site FM or PBSA environment.

- Basic salary: -41,000 to -48,000 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications.
