Pearson Whiffin Recruitment are currently recruiting for four experienced Mechanical Design Engineers to join a growing engineering and critical infrastructure team.

This is an excellent opportunity for technically strong Mechanical Design Engineers to work on complex, high-value projects, taking mechanical designs from initial tender stage through to detailed construction design.

The successful candidates will play a key role in developing mechanical infrastructure solutions, working closely with clients, contractors, suppliers and internal engineering teams throughout the full project lifecycle.

The Role

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of mechanical designs across a variety of technically demanding projects.

You will work across projects from tender and concept stage through to detailed design and construction, with the opportunity to act as Lead Designer on mechanically biased projects.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Producing mechanical designs for critical infrastructure and data centre environments

  • Designing chilled water, cooling and associated mechanical systems

  • Producing mechanical schematics, drawings and technical documentation

  • Developing designs through the relevant RIBA stages

  • Preparing detailed mechanical specifications

  • Producing drawings, calculations, technical submissions and descriptions of operation

  • Reviewing and approving technical and material submittals

  • Carrying out site surveys and producing associated reports

  • Liaising with clients to understand technical requirements and develop appropriate solutions

  • Working closely with subcontractors, suppliers, consultants and system integrators

  • Ensuring drawings and technical information are issued accurately and on time

  • Supporting projects from tender stage through to construction

  • Reviewing client specifications, drawings and tender documentation

  • Preparing technical responses for tenders, proposals and quotations

  • Supporting technical cost estimates and project proposals

  • Identifying technical risks and opportunities within project designs

  • Attending client, supplier and contractor meetings

  • Providing technical support throughout the tendering and project delivery process

  • Supporting the handover of successfully secured projects into the delivery team

  • Conducting technical consultancy and site assessments

  • Preparing reports, recommendations and improvement plans following site visits

  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary design and engineering teams

About You

We are looking for experienced Mechanical Design Engineers with a strong technical background and the confidence to manage design responsibilities across complex engineering projects.

Ideally, you will have:

  • A degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline

  • Approximately 5+ years' experience within mechanical or M&E engineering

  • Strong mechanical design experience within building services, critical infrastructure or industrial environments

  • A good understanding of mechanical cooling systems and associated infrastructure

  • Experience producing technical drawings, specifications and calculations

  • Experience working across different stages of the design and construction process

  • Strong knowledge of mechanical installation practices and engineering principles

  • Experience reviewing technical specifications and tender documentation

  • Ability to carry out site surveys and translate findings into practical design solutions

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent attention to detail

  • Confident communication skills when dealing with clients, contractors and suppliers

  • The ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider project team

  • Good Microsoft Office skills

Experience using software such as AutoCAD, Microsoft Project or ASTA Powerproject would be advantageous.

  • Critical Power & Cooling

  • Technical Design Consultancy

Experience within data centre design, installation, testing or commissioning would be advantageous, although it is not essential.
