The Position

  • The MEA Scientist will be responsible for scientific R&D initiatives focused on membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs).
  • Performing electrochemical testing of commercial MEAs, catalysts, and materials, with detailed analysis of results.
  • Preparing technical reports and presenting findings to the wider team.
  • Investigating performance and failure mechanisms, including the design and testing of accelerated stress tests (ASTs).
  • This is a hands-on laboratory-based role within a small, dynamic team.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Lead research on advanced materials, catalysts, and membranes for PEM electrolysers.
  • Design and execute experiments to improve performance, efficiency, and durability of electrolyser components.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to scale laboratory findings into pilot and commercial systems.
  • Analyse experimental data, generate technical reports, and present findings to stakeholders.
  • Stay at the forefront of scientific literature and emerging technologies in electrochemistry, catalysis, and renewable hydrogen production.
  • Contribute to patent filings, publications, and funding proposals.
  • Support cross-disciplinary projects involving system integration, balance-of-plant optimisation, and techno-economic assessments.
  • Managing research projects, including budget and timeline management.

Person specification

Knowledge-

  • PhD or related industrial experience in chemistry, materials science, electrochemistry, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with risk assessment and COSHH processes.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes for electrodes, MEAs.
  • Expertise in catalyst design, electrode/MEA development, or electrochemical testing methods.
  • Track record of scientific contributions (publications, patents, or technical breakthroughs) is desirable.

Skills-

  • Proven ability to translate research into practical applications.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Self-starter and independent thinker, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to build and manage a team as business grows is desirable.
  • Able to work independently and in a team environment.

Experience-

  • Experience securing external funding (e.g., grants, partnerships).
  • Experience with scaling electrochemical technologies from lab to pilot scale.
  • Hands-on experience with characterisation tools (e.g., cell testing, 3-electrode electrochemical testing, or electrochemical impedance spectroscopy).
  • Postdoctoral or industrial R&D experience in electrolysis, fuel cells, or related electrochemical technologies would be beneficial.
  • Experience working in collaborative, multidisciplinary environments.
