Leadership and Management

• Lead the Maths department team (teachers, TAs, possibly numeracy coordinators).

• Line manage departmental staff, oversee appraisals and professional development.

• Set departmental vision aligned with whole-school priorities.

Curriculum Design and Delivery

• Plan, review, and implement the KS3–KS5 maths curriculum (including GCSE and A-Level if offered).

• Ensure high standards of teaching and learning across all key stages.

• Introduce or maintain schemes of work, assessments, and intervention strategies.

Data and Progress Monitoring

• Analyse performance data to track pupil progress and identify areas for improvement.

• Report on departmental performance to SLT (Senior Leadership Team).

• Lead on strategies to close attainment gaps and support underachieving students.

Teaching

• Typically teach a reduced timetable, often including top sets or exam classes.

• Model outstanding teaching and support others to improve their practice.

Departmental Administration

• Manage the department’s budget and resources.

• Oversee exam entries, coursework, and compliance with exam board requirements.

• Ensure adherence to school policies, e.g., safeguarding, assessment, and behaviour.
