Materials Engineer (Metallurgy)

Please note, this role is based in Barrow-in-Furness working onsite 4-5 days per week

This role sits at Consultant/Technologist level and will act as a key technical authority in the manufacture of metallic components, particularly across forging, casting, and rolling processes. You will provide metallurgical support across Operations, Engineering and Supply Chain, helping to resolve technical issues during build and commissioning phases.

You will:

  • Advise design teams on material selection and corrosion management
  • Support knowledge sharing and capability development within Materials Technology
  • Lead and contribute to research activities, including authoring technical reports
  • Provide specialist metallurgical guidance to ensure consistent and timely investigations
  • Maintain and develop process instructions, standards, and best practices
  • Communicate technical findings and solutions clearly across multiple teams
  • Take ownership of manufacturing processes including forging, casting, and metal forming, with appropriate technical authority

Core requirements

  • Degree qualified (BEng/BSc) in Metallurgy, Materials Science, or similar
  • Strong knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy
  • Proven experience in metal forming and processing techniques
  • Experience supporting or leading teams of metallurgists
  • Background in developing and maintaining metallurgical standards and processes
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and metallographic testing methods
