Barking Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust (BHRUT) is seeking a forward-thinking and motivated consultant microbiologist to join our microbiology team, delivering clinical microbiology and virology services to BHRUT and the local area. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of microbiology to join a dynamic team committed to high standards of care.This is a fixed-term post for 12 months to cover maternity leave.Applicants are encouraged to take on additional responsibilities as Clinical Lead Microbiology or Clinical Director Pathology, with corresponding allowances. The Clinical Director provides leadership to the pathology directorate, overseeing multiple clinical services and laboratories across Queen’s and King George Hospitals, and satellite sites. The role involves working with a General Manager to lead the team, ensuring high-quality, safe, well-governed, and cost-effective services aligned with the Trust''s strategic objectives.The Locum Consultant Microbiologist will handle clinical microbiology and infection consultations, ward rounds, laboratory report authorization, infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, and participate in on-call duties. The role includes involvement in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff and offers broad experience in infection management, with opportunities for career progression.Our organization is continuously improving, with recent developments including new theatres at King George Hospital, a Women’s Health Hub, Ageing Well Centre, and Community Diagnostic Centres providing extensive diagnostic services. We serve a diverse community across two main sites, with over 8,000 staff from 146 countries, many working flexibly and on apprenticeships. We are committed to introducing electronic patient records to enhance care.The Microbiology Laboratory at BHRUT serves two hospital sites, primary care, external commissioners, and local mental health and nursing homes. It operates a 7-day service, with hours from 0900-1700 Monday to Friday, and out-of-hours support by on-call staff.
