Locum Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics Specialising in Hip & Knee

OverviewAn exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic Hip and Knee Surgeon to join the expanding Trauma and Orthopaedic Service at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells Hospital. This post forms part of the new Kent and Medway Orthopaedic Centre team at Maidstone Hospital. The Centre opened in September 2024 and treats patients from across the region, increasing the Trust''s capacity for planned surgical procedures. The Centre contains the latest novel open plan laminar flow theatres with an air canopy over each station, a 14-bed inpatient ward and a 10-bed day case ward, with recovery, x-ray and therapy space, all within a dedicated elective building.
Responsibilities
Perform elective and trauma surgery with specialist expertise in hip and knee trauma.
Contribute to fracture and elective clinics held in Tunbridge Wells, Maidstone and peripheral hospitals.
Participate in day surgery lists and inpatient elective lists in Maidstone; manage trauma lists at Tunbridge Wells.
Be available to cover on-calls during periods of colleague absence or sickness, as required.
Engage in regional orthopaedic teaching programmes and in running local ATLS courses.
Provide a high standard of care to patients under your clinical responsibility, including patients referred to you or cared for by your team, and patients of consults when covering on-call or annual leave.
Participate in clinical and other service activities and developments to ensure high standard of patient care across the Trust.
Work in close cooperation with other medical, professional and managerial colleagues, within and outside the specialty, to deliver high-quality health care and contribute to the Trust''s strategic direction.
Participate actively in the clinical governance of the specialty and attend clinical governance half-days as detailed in the Trust''s Guide to Job Planning (unless on agreed leave or while attending emergencies).
Take an active role in departmental audits, coordinating audit activities and implementing changes.
Take responsibility for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and supervision.
About the Trust and DepartmentThe Trust provides general hospital services to a population of approximately 480,000 in West Kent and North East Sussex, with some specialist services to a larger population. Maidstone Hospital has a stand-alone Orthopaedic Theatre with a 12-bed orthopaedic ward, a day surgery unit, and daily elective and fracture clinics. Tunbridge Wells Hospital, located in Pembury adjacent to the A21, is a Trauma Unit in the South East London, Kent and Medway Trauma Network and has two dedicated elective orthopaedic theatres, a trauma theatre (8:30 am to 6 pm, seven days a week), and weekday morning specialist trauma lists.
