Locomotive Mechanic

A permanent opportunity has arisen for a Locomotive Mechanic to join Tata Steels Port Talbot works. Port Talbot steelworks are the largest in the UK and undergoing a significant decarbonisation project, which will be the largest of its kind in the world once completed.
This role is ideal for a time served apprenticeship holder, with experience working on diesel electric and hybrid locomotives.
Location: Tata Steel, Port Talbot, SA13 2NG
Salary: -38,472.75 per annum (this includes a 12.5% shift allowance)
Shift Patterns: rotating pattern, X7 days on, X2 days off. X3 days on, X2 days off. X5 days on, X2 days off.
This pattern involves working one weekend in every three.
Start: ASAP but pending the successful completion of a medical, which does include a drug and alcohol test
Responsibilities:
- Undertaking electrical inspection and maintenance work across a fleet of 19 shunter locomotives
- Working on traditional diesel-electric models to the latest hybrid technology
- Carrying out primary duties within a recently refurbished maintenance facility, including planned maintenance schedules
- Executing major and minor overhauls of locomotive components
- Performing technical fault finding and providing rapid response to locomotive breakdowns across the Port Talbot site
- Working alongside engineers, leading hands, and the wider mechanical and electrical maintenance team, supporting other team members as required
- Collaborating closely with the team to meet operational priorities
- Ensuring maximum locomotive availability for production requirements
- Adhering to the strongest level of Health and Safety at all times whilst encouraging those around you to do the same
Essential requirements:
- Level 3 qualification (NVQ, C&G or equivalent) in an electrical discipline, ideally through a time served apprenticeship
- 18th edition holder or willingness to work to achieve this
- Driving licence and access to own vehicle (due to the nature of the works)
- Familiarity with AC/DC motors and generators, PLC systems, Relays, Contractors, with a sound knowledge of 3 phase.
- Prior experience working on pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems
- Ability to use multi function test equipment, and other testing tools / devices
- Experience of working on vehicle/plant electrical systems
- The ability to read and understand engineering & electrical drawings
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Strong understanding of safety and environment impacts
- Familiarity in the use of I.T., in particular Microsoft Office applications
- Prior experience with SAP would be advantageous
