As Junior Calibration Engineer, you will report to the Controls & Calibration Manager and your role will primarily focus on the development, testing, and calibration of a range of advanced powertrain and hydrogen-based systems. You will collaborate with Controls Engineers and external ECU suppliers to define requirements, design and implement control strategies, and test and calibrate them across multiple products and projects.

The role requires an individual with prior experience in engine performance development and/or electric powertrain testing and calibration, combined with a genuine interest in hydrogen-based decarbonisation solutions. You will be expected to deliver results quickly, manage multiple tasks effectively, and thrive in a fast-paced environment. This position offers the opportunity to directly contribute to the advancement of hydrogen technologies supporting the transition to zero-emission transport.

Junior Calibration Engineer Role:

This role will primarily focus on (but is not limited to) the performance development, testing, and calibration of:

  • Hydrogen–diesel dual-fuel technology
  • H2ICE engine systems
  • Hydrogen-based electric powertrain systems
  • Mobile hydrogen bowser solutions

Key responsibilities include:

Working with Controls Engineers and external ECU suppliers to define system and control software requirements.

Responsible for the testing and system calibration of control systems and software.

Developing and executing test plans to verify the system and software functionality and safety.

Supporting all phases of the V-cycle development process to ensure correct system and control operation.

Testing and calibrating systems to achieve performance, efficiency, and emissions targets.

Developing and optimising engine calibrations (on engine dyno) to meet performance and emissions requirements across H2ICE projects.

Testing and calibrating control systems for hydrogen-based electric powertrain technologies (including fuel cells, BMS, motor-inverters, etc.).

Conducting testing and calibration of hydrogen bowser solutions.

Maintaining calibration data securely and producing documentation, test reports, and technical analyses.

Diagnosing and resolving technical issues involving components, wiring harnesses, or software during development.

Driving continuous improvement in controls and calibration processes.

Occasional travel to partners, suppliers and customer sites in the UK and abroad.

Junior Calibration Engineer Requirements:

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, or Automotive Engineering, or another relevant discipline, with 2–5 years of industry experience preferred.
  • Experience in engine performance and emissions calibration (diesel, gasoline, or alternative fuels) and/or testing and calibration of electric powertrain systems.
  • Strong technical expertise with a solid understanding of engineering fundamentals.
  • Prior experience in designing software control logic and drafting software change requirements for software development teams.
  • Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to perform detailed data analysis from vehicles or test beds, interpret results accurately, and derive meaningful technical insights.
  • Highly organised, with proven ability to prioritise tasks, manage multiple projects, and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues involving components, wiring harnesses, and control systems.
  • Strong problem-solving mindset, combining innovation and continuous improvement with practical solutions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with confidence in presenting technical results to a range of audiences.
  • Willingness to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and an appreciation of hydrogen safety and industry best practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Willingness to travel to off-site locations for work will be necessary.

Desired:

  • Experience with calibration and diagnostic tools (e.g., ETAS INCA, Vector CANape, CANalyzer, ATI Vision).
  • Familiarity with model-based development tools such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Good understanding of CAN bus and familiarity with CAN 2.0, CAN FD, J1939.
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards (ISO 26262) and their application in automotive systems.
  • Experience within hydrogen, alternative fuels, or low-emissions technology development.

Junior Calibration Engineer Benefits:

Flexible Working: While much of the role is on-site based, flexibility where appropriate to support work-life balance is offered.

Hands-on R&D Environment: Work directly with prototype vehicles, engine development on dyno and cutting-edge hydrogen-electric technologies in a fast-paced, impact-driven setting.

Professional Development: Opportunities to grow your skills through exposure to innovative technologies, collaborative projects, and industry-leading partners.

Team Culture: Join a close-knit, multidisciplinary engineering team passionate about driving decarbonisation in heavy-duty transport.
