The Opportunity

We are recruiting for a Human Factors (HF) / Ergonomics Specialist on behalf of a major client within the UK rail industry. This is an excellent opportunity to join a highly regarded engineering team working within a safety-critical environment, supporting the delivery of complex infrastructure and operational projects.

The successful candidate will play a key role in embedding Human Factors principles throughout the engineering lifecycle, ensuring that system design, safety assurance, and operational performance are optimised to support safe, efficient, and user-centred outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver Human Factors activities across the project lifecycle.
  • Conduct Human Factors analyses, including task analysis, human reliability assessment, and human error identification.
  • Support safety and risk management activities, including participation in HAZOPs, FMEAs, hazard identification workshops, and safety assurance processes.
  • Provide expertise in user-centred design, Human Machine Interface (HMI), and Human Computer Interaction (HCI) assessments.
  • Plan and deliver verification and validation activities, including usability testing, trials, and Human Factors evaluations.
  • Assess and improve human performance factors such as workload, situational awareness, decision-making, and error reduction.
  • Work collaboratively with engineering, safety, operations, and project teams to integrate Human Factors requirements into project delivery.
  • Produce high-quality technical reports, assessments, and assurance documentation.

About You

We are keen to speak with experienced Human Factors professionals who can confidently work within multidisciplinary engineering teams and provide independent specialist input.

Essential Requirements

  • Approximately 5-10+ years'' experience within a Human Factors or Ergonomics role.
  • Experience working in safety-critical or highly regulated industries such as rail, nuclear, defence, oil & gas, aerospace, or healthcare.
  • Strong understanding of Human Factors methodologies and their application within engineering projects.
  • Experience supporting safety assurance, risk assessment, and operational performance improvement activities.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a wider project team.

Desirable Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Human Factors, Ergonomics, Psychology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Professional membership with the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) or equivalent professional body.
  • Previous experience within the rail sector.
  • Experience leading Human Factors workstreams and providing technical assurance.
