HSE Advisor
Location: Cambridge (site-based)
Contract: 6-month+ contract
Rate: Negotiable - circa £60 per hour (Umbrella rate) - CIS is allowed
Working hours: 11 days on / 3 days off, rotational pattern (starting on a Monday). 11 hours per day, Start times 7.30am - Finish: 18:30
The Role
We are looking for an experienced HSE Advisor to provide professional health, safety and environmental support to operational teams, ensuring the safe and compliant delivery of projects. This is a site based HSE role on a project relating to the electrical and mechanical installation/upgrade towards a fully active process plant.
You will play a key role in promoting a positive HSE culture, advising on legislation and best practice, and supporting site teams to manage risk effectively. This role involves hands-on site engagement, monitoring activities, and influencing safe behaviours across multiple workstreams.
HSE Advisor - Key Responsibilities
Compliance & Legislation
Ensure compliance with UK Health & Safety legislation, CDM Regulations, industry standards and internal policies
Keep up to date with regulatory changes and industry best practice
Support the active implementation of HSE management systems and procedures
Risk Management
Support operational teams with hazard identification and risk assessment (RAMS, Safe Systems of Work, Permit-to-Work)
Advise on control measures for high-risk activities including confined spaces, excavations, buried services, lifting operations, working near/over water and temporary works
Site Support & Monitoring
Carry out regular site inspections, audits and safety tours
Provide practical, solution-focused advice to managers, supervisors and site teams
Investigate incidents and near misses, ensuring root causes are identified and corrective actions implemented
Ensure company systems and applications are used effectively
Training & Engagement
Deliver toolbox talks, briefings and HSE awareness sessions
Promote a positive safety culture through engagement, coaching and behavioural safety initiatives
Reporting & Performance
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents and compliance data
- Contribute to monthly performance reporting and improvement action plans
- Support client and regulator audits, providing evidence of compliance
- Support delivery against annual HSE targets and objectives
Collaboration & Leadership
- Work closely with project managers, site supervisors and subcontractors to drive safe delivery
- Challenge unsafe behaviours and poor practice, escalating where required
- Act as a role model for HSE leadership and company values
Skills & Knowledge
- Experience within the construction or engineering sector (desirable)
- Strong attention to detail and analytical approach
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Confident using MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate
- CSCS card (or equivalent)
- Membership of a relevant professional body
- Valid UK driving licence
- Strong working knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015
- Competent in Microsoft Office packages
Desirable
- NEBOSH Diploma or NVQ Level 5/6 in Occupational H&S
- IEMA Certificate
- First Aid at Work
- Incident investigation training (e.g. TOPSET, TapRoot, NEBOSH)
- Behavioural Safety / Human Factors training
- Industry-recognised training in high-risk activities (e.g. HSG47, Temporary Works, Lifting, Excavations, Working at Height)
