Horticultural and Grounds Maintenance Worker

Our client is seeking a committed and proactive Public Realm Operative to join their Public Realm Team. You will help maintain and improve the town''s parks, open spaces, streets, and other public areas - making a real difference to the local community.

This is a hands-on role where you''ll carry out a wide range of maintenance and cleansing duties, including grounds care, horticulture, and street cleanliness. You''ll be part of a small, supportive team but will also be expected to manage your own workload and take pride in what you do.



Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and enhance public open spaces, parks, play areas, verges, and car parks.
  • Undertake grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, planting, hedge trimming, and weeding.
  • Remove litter and dog fouling to a high standard across public areas.
  • Operate and maintain equipment, vehicles, and tools safely and effectively.
  • Support initiatives such as floral displays and community clean-ups.
  • Apply pesticides/herbicides safely (if qualified).
  • Report defects or hazards such as fly-tipping or damaged street furniture.
  • Assist with events and other facilities as needed.
  • Engage with the public, partners, and community groups in a professional manner.
  • Keep accurate records in line with the procedures.
  • Contribute to service improvements and local environmental goals.

Essential:

  • Experience in horticulture, grounds maintenance or street cleansing.
  • Ability to organise and prioritise your own workload with minimal supervision.
  • Flexible, reliable, and able to meet operational deadlines.
  • Commitment to high standards of customer care, health & safety, and equality.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather and outside normal hours as needed.

Desirable:

  • NVQ Level 2 / City & Guilds in horticulture or a related subject.
  • Pesticide application certificate (PA1/PA6).
  • First Aid and/or Fire Warden certification.
  • Chapter 8 (Highway Working) training.
  • Chainsaw certificate or experience with power tools/equipment.
  • Experience operating mowers, sweepers, or similar machinery.
  • Full UK Driving Licence (including Category C)
