Homelessness Prevention Officer

Location: Halifax, West Yorkshire | Hybrid working

Contract: Temporary | Pay: -13.59 - -13.69 per hour (PAYE)

Hours: Monday - Friday, 09:00 - 17:00 (7.24 hours/day)

Start Date: 07/09/2026 | Assignment length: approx. 6 weeks +

Are you passionate about helping people stay in their homes and preventing homelessness before it happens? We''re looking for a Homelessness Prevention Officer to join a busy Housing Options team in Calderdale, working directly with individuals and families to prevent and relieve homelessness.

What you''ll be doing:

  • Interviewing customers who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, providing tailored advice and support
  • Assessing needs and developing personal housing plans, including written decision letters
  • Managing a caseload and carrying out hands-on prevention work - negotiating with landlords, families, and other parties
  • Building strong relationships with partner agencies, housing providers, voluntary organisations, and community groups
  • Visiting clients at home or other suitable venues to understand their situation and needs
  • Supporting clients with paperwork and online applications for housing
  • Attending case conferences and multi-agency meetings
  • Maintaining accurate, confidential case records

What we''re looking for:

  • Knowledge of homelessness legislation, particularly Part VII of the Housing Act 1996 as amended by the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017
  • A sound understanding of prevention and relief duties, including Personalised Housing Plans
  • GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at Grade C/4+, or demonstrable relevant experience
  • Experience working with individuals/families facing homelessness, or with vulnerable people more broadly
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage a caseload and competing deadlines
  • Good negotiation, assertiveness, and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Confident IT skills, including Microsoft Office
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes (reasonable adjustments considered for disabled candidates)
  • Comfortable with occasional evening/weekend work and regular home visits across the Borough
