Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) - SEN Reception Class
Location: Streatham, Lambeth, South London
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Contract: Full-time, Term Time Only

About the Role We are seeking a passionate, dedicated, and experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our Alternative Provision team within a welcoming primary school in Streatham, Lambeth.
This is a unique opportunity to make a genuine difference in the lives of young children with additional needs. The successful candidate will lead teaching and learning within a specialist Reception SEN class, supporting a small group of 5-8 pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) and complex needs, including personal care requirements.
Working closely with the SENCO, class teacher, therapists, and wider support staff, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging lessons tailored to pupils following an adaptive curriculum, ensuring that every child can access learning and achieve their individual outcomes.
Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and deliver high-quality teaching sessions for Reception-aged pupils with SEND.
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual pupil needs and EHCP targets.
  • Support pupils with Autism and complex communication, sensory, and learning needs.
  • Provide personal care support where required, ensuring dignity and respect at all times.
  • Create a nurturing, safe, and engaging learning environment.
  • Monitor pupil progress and contribute to assessment and reporting processes.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, therapists, parents, and external professionals.
  • Support the development of pupils'' independence, communication, social skills, and emotional regulation.
About You We are looking for someone who:
  • Holds HLTA status or has demonstrable experience working at HLTA level.
  • Has experience supporting or teaching children with Autism and SEND.
  • Has confidence in planning and delivering lessons independently.
  • Demonstrates a strong understanding of adaptive and inclusive teaching approaches.
  • Is calm, patient, resilient, and passionate about supporting children with additional needs.
  • Has experience with personal care or is willing to undertake relevant training.
  • Possesses excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
