Higher Construction Skills Coach

We are seeking a committed and knowledgeable Higher Construction Trainer to support the development of apprentices working towards Level 4–6 qualifications in construction, civil engineering, and related fields. This is a key role in ensuring apprentices are on the right pathway, supported throughout their learning journey, and fully prepared for their final assessments.
This is not a classroom teaching role, but you will work closely with apprentices, employers, and lecturers to monitor progress, provide feedback, and facilitate structured reviews. You will play a central role in aligning workplace training with apprenticeship standards and ensuring apprentices meet all requirements for successful completion.
Key Responsibilities
- Support apprentices from initial enrolment through to end-point assessment.
- Ensure correct registration on apprenticeship standards and HNC/BSc courses.
- Facilitate initial discussions with employers and apprentices regarding course content, objectives, and assessment processes.
- Monitor apprentice progress, providing timely feedback via Smart Assessor and regular review meetings (every 10–12 weeks).
- Liaise with employers to confirm apprentices have access to the required scope of work and development opportunities.
- Collaborate with HNC/BSc lecturers to track academic progress.
- Identify concerns around attendance, performance, or behaviour, agreeing development actions with apprentices and employers.
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of apprentices.
- Prepare apprentices for final projects and end-point assessments.
Person Specification
Essential:
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal) with the ability to engage confidently at all levels.
- Excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Confident IT user with willingness to learn new applications (experience with Smart Assessor desirable).
- Ability to produce accurate reports and maintain timely records.
Desirable:
- Experience in construction management or senior-level construction responsibilities.
- Assessing/education qualification (TAQA, A1, D32) or experience supporting/coordinating training and assessment.
Apprenticeship Standards Supported
- Level 4: Building Services Engineering Senior Technician, Civil Engineering Senior Technician, Construction Design and Build Technician, Construction Quantity Surveying Technician, Construction Site Supervisor.
- Level 6 (degree): Civil Engineer, Construction Site Manager, Design & Construction Manager.
Additional Information
- Expected caseload: approx. 40 apprentices (pro-rata for fractional roles).
- Travel is required; mileage reimbursed at £0.45 per mile (excluding normal commute).
