High School English Teacher

In the English Department, students and teachers work together at the Harkness table, where teachers often play the role of participant facilitator. Students read a variety of challenging texts representing diverse perspectives to promote critical thinking and stimulate reflection. These include prose-both fiction and nonfiction-drama and poetry. In partnership with reading texts closely and writing across a range of genres, students cultivate increasingly dynamic speaking and listening skills. All courses are designed and taught to enable students to develop their standards-based skills in all four pillars of our program: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. While all freshmen and sophomores take English 9 and English 10, Junior and Senior Electives provide the opportunity for sustained inquiry into a given topic, genre, or period. Teachers should be able to teach across grades 9-12. Members of the department also coach students outside the classroom, in a variety of extracurricular activities.
