Plant Fitter - Heavy Plant (Rail Sector)
Basic salary on a 40-hour week is £38,480, with an OTE of c£70,000
Pay and Shift patterns:
- £18.50 per hour Weekdays: 7:30 am - 5 pm
- £27.00 per hour Midweek nights: 11 pm to 5 am
- £38.80 per hour Weekend nights: Fri 6 pm - Mon 5 am
- On-call allowance is £350 per week when on call and min 2 hours is always paid.
- Company Van (VW Crafter + fuel card)
- 40 hours guaranteed per week, but typically 50-60 hours available, with hours over 40 paid at an enhanced rate.
- Fitters will be required to work unsociable hours (nights/weekends) — flexibility is required.
The Opportunity:
- We have an exciting opportunity for a Plant Fitter to join us at our Birmingham Depot.
- You''ll be part of a technical team maintaining and repairing our fleet of heavy and rail-adapted plant, supporting critical rail and infrastructure projects across the UK.
- Service, maintain and inspect a wide range of heavy and specialist rail plant, including: Road-Rail Vehicles (RRVs) such as Liebherr 920S and Colmar rail excavators. Dozers, dump trucks, cranes, and lifting equipment. MEWPs and telehandlers. Attachments (grabs, flails, buckets, etc.)
- Carry out planned and reactive maintenance both in the workshop and on site.
- Diagnose faults quickly under pressure to minimise downtime and prevent costly delays.
- Be on-call to support emergency breakdowns — sometimes travelling between sites to fix issues or escalate for replacement machines.
- Work closely with operators, site teams and managers to ensure safety and efficiency.
- Complete all regulatory safety checks (LOLER, PUWER, etc.).
What We''re Looking For
- Minimum 3 years'' experience in plant/heavy machinery maintenance (construction, agricultural, military, rail, HGV all considered).
- NVQ Level 3 in Plant Maintenance (or willingness to complete a conversion route).
- Full, valid UK driving licence.
- Strong fault-finding, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical skills.
- On-call availability.
- Must have a clean criminal record and pass a DBS
- Must pass a rail medical and drug and alcohol screening test
