Health & Safety Consultant

Location: Derbyshire | Hybrid working
Salary: c-50k + 10% bonus
Contract: Permanent, full-time

Are you an experienced Health & Safety professional with a background in the rail industry, looking for a role where your expertise, ideas and contribution will really count?

We''re recruiting for an established and successful specialist consultancy offering a fantastic opportunity to join a close-knit, values-driven business where people are genuinely valued and encouraged to make a difference.

This is a rewarding and varied role, offering the chance to work closely with clients across different sectors, develop long-term relationships and use your expertise to deliver practical, meaningful solutions.

Unlike larger corporate environments, you''ll have real visibility and influence within the business, working closely with senior leadership and contributing to its continued growth and success.

With Investors in People Gold recognition, a positive working culture, hybrid flexibility and an excellent benefits package, the could be a great next move.

The opportunity

As a Health & Safety Consultant, you''ll enjoy a varied mix of hands-on consultancy, client engagement, auditing and project work, supporting organisations to maintain high standards of health, safety and environmental compliance.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Working directly with clients to understand their operational challenges and provide practical, commercially focused H&S advice
  • Reviewing existing working practices and recommending improvements to policies, procedures and compliance frameworks
  • Carrying out site inspections, audits and risk assessments, identifying risks and supporting appropriate solutions
  • Advising on relevant legislation, industry standards and regulatory requirements, particularly within the rail sector
  • Supporting the development, implementation and ongoing improvement of SHEQ management systems, including ISO standards
  • Delivering consultancy, training and guidance to help clients build safer and more effective working environments
  • Building trusted, long-term client relationships and identifying opportunities to provide additional support
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues and contributing ideas to develop and enhance the company''s services

This is a role offering plenty of independence and responsibility, but with the support of a knowledgeable, approachable team around you.

About you

We''re keen to speak with experienced Health & Safety Consultants or SHEQ professionals who have developed strong technical expertise within the rail industry.

You''ll ideally bring:

  • Significant experience within rail, with a sound understanding of the industry''s health, safety and compliance requirements
  • A recognised Health & Safety qualification, such as NEBOSH General Certificate or higher
  • Professional membership of IOSH, ideally with Chartered status or willingness to work towards
  • Knowledge of environmental management, ideally supported by relevant qualifications or ISEP membership
  • Experience of conducting audits, inspections and risk assessments, alongside advising on safe systems of work
  • An understanding of ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 management systems
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the confidence to engage with clients at different levels
  • A practical, solutions-focused approach and the ability to manage your own workload effectively

Chartered status would be advantageous but isn''t essential if you can demonstrate the right combination of rail experience, qualifications and professional membership.

You might already be working in consultancy and looking for a fresh challenge, or perhaps you''re in an internal SHEQ role and would welcome the opportunity to move into a more varied, client-facing position.

Just as importantly, we''re looking for someone personable, proactive and collaborative who will enjoy being part of a smaller, ambitious business.

Why join?

There are some real advantages to joining this business, both in terms of the working environment and the opportunity to make an impact.

  • A role where you can make a difference: Your experience and ideas will be welcomed, with the opportunity to influence how services are delivered and support the future success of the business.
  • A people-focused culture: Join an Investors in People Gold accredited organisation that genuinely invests in and values its employees.
