The Head of Nursing provides strategic and operational leadership for the nursing workforce across the GP federation. This role is responsible for the effective management of nursing staff, including recruitment, appraisal, continuing professional development (CPD), and performance management. The postholder leads on the development and implementation of clinical policies and service improvements, ensuring high-quality, person -centred care.They are clinically accountable for the delivery of nursing services, working collaboratively with internal teams and external agencies to ensure integrated, safe, and effective care pathways. The role also carries responsibility for the management of budgets and physical resources related to nursing services, ensuring efficient and sustainable use of assets.Main duties of the job

Leadership and ManagementProvide strategic and operational leadership to the nursing workforce across the federation.Lead on recruitment, induction, appraisal, and performance management of nursing staff.Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous professional development (CPD).Ensure effective workforce planning and succession planning.Clinical Governance and Service DeliveryEnsure compliance with clinical governance frameworks, policies, and procedures.Maintain clinical accountability for the delivery of safe, effective, and high-quality nursing services.Liaise with internal and external agencies to ensure integrated care pathways and service continuity.Lead on the development and implementation of clinical policies and protocols.Strategic and Operational PlanningDevelop and implement nursing strategies aligned with organisational goals and national healthcare priorities.Contribute to business planning and service transformation initiatives.Monitor and evaluate service performance, identifying areas for improvement and innovation.Resource and Budget ManagementLiaise with leadership team with regards the nursing budget, ensuring effective use of financial and physical resources.Support procurement and maintenance of clinical equipment and supplies.Ensure compliance with financial governance and reporting requirements.About us

They work alongside our Board to shape our future direction with the valued input from our member practices. Education and Qualification

Registered Nurse with a valid NMC registration.Experience

Extensive experience in a senior nursing role, preferably in primary or community careProven leadership and management experienceExperience in strategic planning and service developmentExperience working across organisational boundariesExperience in budget managementKnowledge

In-depth understanding of clinical governance and healthcare regulationsKnowledge of current best practices in nursing and patient careUnderstanding of budget management and resource allocationFamiliarity with national policy drivers in primary careKnowledge of quality improvement methodologiesSkills and Abilities

Strong leadership and interpersonal skillsExcellent communication and negotiation abilitiesAbility to manage resources effectivelyCommitment to continuous professional development and quality improvementAbility to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholdersStrong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skillsAbility to influence at a strategic levelDisclosure and Barring Service Check
