We are responsible for setting, leading and delivering the vision for a modern digital government. We’re part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) and employ more than 1,000 people all over the UK, with hubs in Manchester, London and Bristol.GOV.UK One Login represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to simplify and widen access to all digital government services. Sitting at the heart of the government, we are building one straightforward, secure and inclusive way for users to log in and prove who they are that will work across all government services. This is an exciting opportunity to lead live services for Digital Identity (DI) at GDS.The Head of Live Service will have oversight for service management and service operations; leading the delivery and continuous improvement of Digital Identity services. This is a high profile role suited to an experienced service leader with a track record of providing leadership on a range of complex services. The role reports into the Deputy Director for Operations.Responsibilities

provide strategic service leadership within an agile, multidisciplinary environment; drive operational excellence and efficiency by setting clear objectives for live service. Continue to evolve and improve DI’s service maturity and organisation.act as a champion for live service across the programme; help service insights inform product development and align with product and delivery teams to ensure effective live service support processes and structures.establish and maintain governance and reporting structures with visibility across live service, including defined SLOs/SLAs and measurable SLIs; collaborate with the Lead Performance Analyst and Head of SRE to develop a holistic view of overall service performance.manage and build the capability of a high-performing, multidisciplinary team comprising civil servants and managed service providers.maintain oversight for service operations, including DI’s Technical Service Desk and 24/7 monitoring and incident response; ensure major incident management plans, problem management and business continuity are in place; enable effective out-of-hours processes, training, documentation and capacity planning.oversee service management, including supplier relationship management, ongoing relationships with Relying Parties and change/transition governance and processes.scope and implement tooling to support live service operations in collaboration with the Head of SRE to provide a joined-up view of service performance.Person specification

We’re interested in people who have worked on a Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) or comparable service, with knowledge and experience of:running a complex, live service with effective processes and capacity to support high user volumes within an agile, multidisciplinary environmentbuilding service capability across a large or complex programme through recruitment, upskilling and developing effective processes within product delivery teamsoverseeing high-impact, complex service changes with appropriate engagement and assurance, and maintaining a forward look for key stakeholderssupplier relationship and contract management to ensure high levels of service performancemajor Incident Management – incident readiness, service continuity planning, and strong leadership during incidentsreporting on service performance for senior audiences; driving continuous improvement and sharing insights to inform product developmentrelevant service management framework knowledge, with an expert certificate in the service management frameworkPlease note that this role requires SC clearance, which would normally require 5 years’ UK residency in the past 5 years. This is not an absolute requirement, but supplementary checks may be needed where individuals have not lived in the UK for that period. This may affect security clearance timing or appointment feasibility.Seniority level
