About the Role
We are seeking an ambitious, innovative, and highly motivated Head of Design Technology / Engineering to lead and develop a thriving DT and Engineering department from September 2026. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced practitioner or current middle leader ready to take the next step in their career within a supportive and forward-thinking secondary school.
The successful candidate will have the vision and drive to inspire students, lead curriculum development, and ensure high standards of teaching and learning across all DT and Engineering disciplines.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strong, effective leadership and strategic direction for the DT/Engineering department
- Lead curriculum design, implementation, and review across KS3, KS4, and KS5 (where applicable)
- Ensure consistently high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment within the department
- Monitor and raise standards of student progress and attainment
- Manage and develop departmental staff through coaching, mentoring, and appraisal
- Oversee departmental resources, including specialist workshops and health & safety compliance
- Promote STEM, creativity, and practical problem-solving across the school
- Contribute to whole-school improvement and leadership initiatives
The Ideal Candidate Will Have
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- A strong subject specialism in Design Technology and/or Engineering
- Proven experience of teaching DT/Engineering at secondary level
- Evidence of successful leadership or coordination (or readiness to step into a leadership role)
- A clear vision for high-quality DT and Engineering education
- Excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- A commitment to inclusive education and safeguarding
