The Laboratory is part of the Blood Sciences division of the NHS East and Southeast London Pathology Partnership, which provides pathology services to the Homerton, Lewisham and Greenwich and the Barts Health NHS Trusts. The laboratory supports adult and paediatric stem cell transplantation, adult kidney transplantation, paediatric heart, lung and thymus transplantation as well as a variety of immunogenetics services.Main duties of the job

As a Band 7 HCPC Registered Healthcare/Clinical Scientist in HandI, the post holder will supervise teams of band 3-6 staff in the laboratory to perform, analyse, authorize, verify and report on a range of complex tests, providing training to staff as required. With delegated responsibility, the post holder will organise the day-to-day operation of the molecular and/or serology sections of the laboratory and will rotate between both sections as required. The post holder will liaison with clinical units, providing highly specialized advice regarding further investigations and donor selection for transplant, etc. The post holder will undertake directed RandD projects including the development, validation and implementation of new procedures. The post holder will participate in an appropriate CPD scheme and carry out private study to ensure the required level of attainment and maintenance of HCPC Registration. The post holder will participate in the ''out of hours'' on-call service in support of the deceased donor transplant programs. The post holder will deputize for the Head of Section as and when required.About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health. The Pathology Partnership was formed in May 2021. Between 2021 and 2024 the Partnership undertook a complex transformation programme to establish a single network of laboratories, underpinned by a single Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and single Quality Management System (QMS). The Partnership has a main hub laboratory at the Royal London Hospital and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at the six other hospital sites served by the Partnership. The Partnership has three operational divisions: o Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry o Microbiology and Virology o Cellular Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics. The 2024/25 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £121m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 860 WTE. Must have a BSc in a biological scienceMust have post graduate training in HandI gained either through the STP route, through BSHI Diploma followed by the clinical portfolio leading to HCPC state registration as a clinical scientist or through the BMS state registration followed by the Specialist Portfolio in HandI or ImmunologyExperience

Highly specialist experience of immunology and HandI serology and molecular genetics (post graduate period) covering all routine and non-routine testsExperience in HLA routine and non-routine serological techniques including Luminex antibody screening and identification, CDC screening, CDC crossmatching and flowcytometric crossmatchingExperience in HLA routine and non-routine molecular techniques, including HLA typing by NGS, PCR-SSP, Luminex and qPCRExperience of design and implementation of validation of new processes, kits, reagents and equipment and developing and carrying out laboratory audits that lead to changes in practice in the departmentPost HCPC registration experience working in an HandI laboratoryEvidence of involvement in research projects.Knowledge

Highly specialist knowledge in immunology and HandI serology and molecular genetics (gained during post graduate period) covering all routine and non-routine testsSkills

Highly developed practical laboratory skills and manual dexterity in order to carry out on call and routine laboratory tests with speed and accuracyProven organizational skills and be methodical and adaptableMust be able to work unsupervised from week to week and prioritise own workload and those of junior staffMust be able develop and implement policies in all area of the laboratoryWill be required to take overall responsibility for managing an aspect of the laboratory service, including placing contract orders and managing equipment as required. Options include but are not limited to training, audits, document control, HandS, asset management and change controlWill be required to manage junior staff in the regular maintenance of equipment, departmental HandS or control of laboratory reagent and consumables stockMust be able to apply own judgement to the interpretation of a range of complex laboratory results, including Luminex antibody, HLA type, CDC crossmatch and Flow crossmatch, correctly analysing the complex data and making judgements about potential further investigationsMust be able to take into account patient clinical history, including relevance of patient disease type and stage, treatments and medication the patient might be on, as well as impact of previous transplants and other sensitizing events and type of donor and nature of any HLA mismatchesMust also be able to propose quality improvement changes to all areas of the laboratoryComputing skills (Microsoft Office), experience using Laboratory Information Systems and HandI analysis softwarePersonal and Development

Ability to work as part of a teamGood communication skills with staff at all levels including other members of the interdisciplinary transplant teamsWill need to provide and receive complex HLA data orally (in person and over the phone), in writing and in electronic form, where there are barriers to understanding. Must be able to plan and organise several complex activities in and out of hours e.g. in a lone working environment to obtain a crossmatch result, forming plans and adjusting those plans to the unique situation for each unique crossmatchMust be able effectively direct and manage the on-going routine duties of MTOs and Healthcare Scientists in a section of the laboratory under the guidance but not supervision of the Head of Section. The Section Head will provide and define the expectations but the post holder will manage the teams to deliver on those expectationsAble to perform the duties of the post with any aids and adaptationsDisclosure and Barring Service Check
