Food Safety Officer

Job Description

We are currently seeking an experienced Food Safety Officer to join the Environmental Health team at the London Borough of Camden on a short-term assignment.

In this role, you will be responsible for conducting food safety inspections, investigations, enforcement actions, and managing complex casework to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and local authority policies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct food safety inspections, re-inspections, and surveys across commercial premises

  • Investigate food-related complaints and enforce statutory regulations

  • Serve statutory notices and initiate prosecutions where required

  • Prepare detailed reports, legal documentation, and provide expert witness support when needed

  • Consult with businesses, landlords, developers, and contractors to resolve compliance issues

  • Provide specialist advice and oversee junior staff in legal drafting and case development

  • Represent the council at tribunals, courts, and public inquiries

  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records in line with council procedures

Requirements:

  • Background in food safety is mandatory

  • Hold relevant qualifications (EHRB, CIEH, or equivalent) and up-to-date food safety competencies

  • Strong knowledge of food safety legislation and codes of practice

  • Proven experience in enforcement and prosecution processes

  • Ability to manage a complex caseload independently

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills

  • Ability to work occasional out-of-hours for inspections
