Food Process Design Engineer (SolidWorks), Junior to Mid Level
Food Process Design Engineer (SolidWorks), Junior to Mid Level
Location: Peterborough
Rate: £30-£40 per hour, depending on experience | Outside IR35 | 12-month contract
Love turning a P&ID into equipment that actually gets built? Spend 12 months doing exactly that for the food and beverage industry, and grow your design skills while you do.
The role and about you
If you’re a mechanical designer with solid project experience behind you, and you want your work to go further than a single one-off job, this one is for you.
You’ll take process requirements, P&IDs and customer needs and turn them into practical SolidWorks designs. You’ll also help shape whole equipment ranges, so your thinking gets reused rather than shelved.
Day to day, you’ll:
- Design and modify food and beverage process equipment in SolidWorks, from 3D models and assemblies through to fabrication drawings
- Adapt existing designs to different capacities, processes and customers, spotting where standardisation can save time later
- Work out how your equipment connects to pipework, pumps, valves, tanks, vessels, conveyors and instrumentation
- Review third-party designs and models, and catch issues before they reach the shop floor
- Visit customer and manufacturing sites to survey, measure and see how your designs fit the real world
- Work with process, project and manufacturing teams, plus suppliers and fabricators
You’ll be a great fit if you:
- Are at a junior to mid-level stage, with 5-10 years of hands-on design experience and the confidence to work independently
- Are confident in SolidWorks and enjoy creating, modifying and reviewing models and drawings
- Have a mechanical design background in process equipment or industrial machinery
- Are comfortable working from P&IDs, specifications and data sheets
Bonus points if you know hygienic design, CIP, washdown environments or food manufacturing machinery, or have worked with major food manufacturers. If you haven’t, but you’re a strong designer, we’d still like to hear from you.
What’s in it for you
- £30-£40 per hour, Outside IR35
- 12-month contract: a year of steady, varied work with room to see projects through
- Range development: your designs shape product ranges, not just single jobs
- Site visits: you’ll see your designs in real production environments, not just on screen
- Mix of people: you’ll work with engineering teams, suppliers and external designers, so you’ll learn from every side of a project
