Make a Real Difference as an English Teacher – SEND / Post-16

As an English Teacher supporting neurodivergent young people in a specialist post-16 environment, you will have the chance to inspire learners who may not have thrived in mainstream education. You'll work in smaller groups, help tailor programmes around each student's unique needs, and be part of a college committed to wellbeing, individuality, and positive relationships.

• Competitive hourly pay of £26.62 – £29.23
• Part-time position: just 2 days per week
• Flexible working days to suit your availability (excluding Wednesday)

You will deliver English as part of each learner's individual study programme, supporting both Functional Skills and GCSE English qualifications. The teaching approach is highly personalised, with an emphasis on creativity, flexibility, and building positive relationships that foster confidence and engagement.

Hours are 8:30am – 4:40pm, two days per week (one day based in Aston, the other in Birmingham City Centre). Days are flexible, but Wednesday is not available.

Start date is after October half term, with the potential for an earlier start.

• Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills and GCSE English sessions
• Adapt lessons to meet the unique starting points and needs of each learner
• Develop literacy, communication, and English skills relevant to students’ goals
• Support wellbeing and individual progression within a small group environment
• Maintain high standards of safeguarding and inclusion at all times
• Work closely with SEND staff and the wider college team
• Assess, monitor and record student progress, providing constructive feedback

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is essential
• Experience of teaching English to learners with SEND and/or neurodivergent profiles is highly desirable
• Confidence delivering Functional Skills and GCSE English
• Strong understanding of differentiated and personalised teaching approaches
• Experience adapting lessons for Autism/ASC, ADHD, dyslexia, anxiety, communication differences, or similar
• Ability to build trust and positive relationships with students with diverse experiences of education
• Patient, flexible, empathetic and creative approach to teaching
• Enhanced Child & Adult DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
• Capacity to provide suitable references covering the most recent 24 months

ECTs are not being considered for this position due to the specialist nature of the role.
