NAES CorporationThe Heartlands facility, situated in Birmingham, UK, is a 100 MW simple-cycle natural gas-fired power station powered by two Rolls-Royce Industrial Trent 50 gas turbines. It features GE Fanuc Cimplicity and Woodward Netcon 5000 control systems.
The Electrical, Controls, and Instrumentation (ECandI) Technician will provide equal support to Whitetower Derby, located in Derby, UK. Whitetower Derby is a 58 MW simple-cycle natural gas-fired power station equipped with a Rolls-Royce Industrial Trent 60 gas turbine and the same GE Fanuc Cimplicity and Woodward Netcon 5000 control systems.
Opportunity Summary
The ECandI Technician''s core responsibilities involve diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in both instrument and control systems as well as electric and electrical systems, including various critical components such as PLCs, transformers, and high-voltage distribution systems. The role requires identifying root causes of equipment failures, updating wiring schematics, utilising electrical test equipment, and documenting maintenance activities according to CMMS procedures. Additionally, the position includes coordinating maintenance activities, managing safety procedures, and actively participating in the Safety Committee to ensure optimal equipment performance and reliability.
This role primarily encompasses the Whitetower Energy Ltd. locations at Heartlands, in Birmingham, and Whitetower Derby, located within Rolls-Royce Aerospace, with the ECandI Technician providing equal support to both sites. Additionally, the Technician may be required to assist at other locations across the Northern and Southern regions, including Middlesbrough, Dewsbury, Peterborough, Croydon, and Exeter, as needed.
Primary Functions
Perform ECandI work as required including, but not limited to, the following:
Diagnose, calibrate, and repair malfunctions in instrument and control systems, including transmitters, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), plant or distributed control systems (DCS), instrument loops, flow meters, pressure probes, temperature probes, and level probes.Diagnose and repair malfunctions in electric and electrical systems, including transformers, relays, switches, generator monitoring and control systems, medium and high-voltage distribution systems, and monitoring devices.Identify the root causes of equipment failures and resolve related problems.Analyse and interpret signals from log files to enhance equipment performance and reliability.Properly utilise electrical test equipment and other related tools.Update wiring schematics and prints as necessary.Report and document all maintenance activities according to CMMS procedures.Assist plant management in coordinating maintenance activities, including collaboration with third-party contractors.Communicate any issues or concerns observed at the facility while working.Manage and implement corporate safety procedures at the local level.Actively participate in the Safety Committee.

Working Relationships
The ECandI Technician reports to the Field Manager and works in cooperation with other plant personnel (in particular the Field Planner Coordinator) on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant. Responds to direction from the General Manager in the absence of the Field Manager/Field Planning Coordinator.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 15 kg.
The power station environment may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.
Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which may include hard hats, safety glasses and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict no-smoking policies apply in and around the facility.
Travel
The role occasionally provides assistance at other sites in the Northern and Southern regions if requested, including Middlesborough, Dewsbury, Peterborough, Croydon, and Exeter.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will be required to participate in the Fitness for Duty Programme. This includes a post-offer medical examination, drug screening, and ongoing random drug testing during employment. There are strict no-smoking policies in and around the facility.
Work Schedule
This position entails a regular work schedule of Monday to Friday during regular day shift hours, totalling 37 hours per week: 0800 – 1600 from Monday to Thursday, and 0800 – 1530 on Friday. Position may at times also require extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. "On call" status may be required.
Compensation
This position offers an annual base salary ranging from £51,000 to £57,000 and includes eligibility for an annual performance bonus.
Job Qualifications
Ideally, a time-served CandI apprenticeship or qualifications such as BTEC, NVQ, ONC, or HNC in a relevant engineering discipline.Previous experience working with control and instrumentation equipment, ideally in power generation.Experience with Open Cycle (OCGT) or Closed Cycle (CCGT) gas turbine technology is desirable.Preferred experience in troubleshooting, calibrating, and programming programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and distributed control systems (DCS).Experience with control systems such as Woodward, GE Fanuc, and Siemens are desirable but not essential.Proven experience in diagnosing and repairing malfunctions in electric and electrical systems, including transformers, relays, switches, generator monitoring and control systems, and medium and high-voltage distribution systems, along with strong technical knowledge of monitoring devices and electrical safety standards.Demonstrate the ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues effectively and in a timely manner.Previous experience using CMMS systems for work planning is desirable.Ability to work from industrial drawings.Previous working knowledge of health, safety, and environmental legislation and regulations is desirable.Practical experience with industry safety rules or lockout systems is beneficial.Experience and proficiency in using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.Must be highly organised and possess excellent oral and written communication skills.Must possess a valid and unrestricted United Kingdom driving licence, and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
