The role

A safety-critical operator is seeking an EC&I Technician to deliver high-quality reactive and planned maintenance at a fuel storage/terminal site in the Portsmouth area. You''ll be responsible for maintaining and fault-finding across key electrical and control assets, including electrical distribution, motors, drives, switchgear, instrumentation and control systems. The post also includes first-line maintenance support for the BPCS (Basic Process Control System) and associated equipment.

The role is primarily site-based, however there may be occasional requirements to support other UK locations. This can involve overnight stays, so a full UK driving licence is essential. Overtime may be available during the week and at weekends (not mandatory).

Key responsibilities

  • Provide EC&I maintenance support to day-to-day operations, ensuring equipment remains safe, available and compliant.

  • Troubleshoot electrical/control faults, complete repairs effectively, and accurately record actions taken.

  • Carry out routine inspections and quality checks on electrical systems to relevant standards and legal requirements.

  • Complete assigned tasks safely and to agreed timeframes, including fault investigation, planned repair scopes, and proactive/reactive maintenance.

  • Apply safe working practices aligned with high-hazard industry expectations (e.g., COMAH/DSEAR/EAWR/HASAWA where applicable).

  • Support continuous improvement by identifying repeat failures, recommending corrective actions, and maintaining good maintenance discipline.

  • Where required, take responsibility for job completion and supervise/support other operatives.

Training will be provided for any specific systems or instrumentation maintenance tools used on site.

About you

You''ll be a qualified engineering technician with a recognised apprenticeship (or equivalent) and proven experience in electrical control and instrumentation maintenance. You''ll work methodically, remain calm during breakdown situations, follow procedures, and demonstrate a strong safety record-ideally gained within hazardous or regulated operations.

You should have a strong working knowledge of:

  • National Working Rules for the Electrical Industry

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989

  • Electrical supply/installation practices, inspection and testing

You must be medically fit for Breathing Apparatus and Confined Space training/operations and have full colour vision.

Essential skills / knowledge

  1. 18th Edition (BS 7671)

  2. Completed a registered apprenticeship or equivalent structured training with practical electrical installation experience

  3. NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation (or approved equivalent)

  4. Minimum two years'' experience working as an electrician post-training

  5. Demonstrated competence and a suitable qualification in inspection, testing, commissioning and certification (e.g., City & Guilds 2391 or equivalent)

  6. Electrical maintenance experience on motors, switchgear and MCC/control panels (highly desirable)
    Plus: Full UK driving licence

Desirable

  • City & Guilds 2391-52 (Inspection & Testing)

  • Experience in hazardous/major hazard operations (e.g., COMAH)

  • Previous exposure to CompEx EX01-EX04 (desirable)
