Wokingham Borough Council (3 days in the office per week) -40-45 per hour Initial Contract: October 2026 - March 2027 Full-Time
Wokingham Borough Council''s Lead Local Flood Authority (LLFA) is seeking an experienced Drainage Engineer to join their Highways Drainage Team as a Reactive Drainage Lead for an initial six-month contract over the winter period with a great chance of extension-to permanent. This is an excellent opportunity for a senior drainage professional to take ownership of reactive drainage investigations, flood response activities, and drainage maintenance coordination across the borough.The Role Working closely with the LLFA Manager and a team of experienced drainage professionals, you will lead the reactive drainage workload and play a key role in responding to flooding and drainage issues affecting the highway network and surrounding land drainage systems.
Key responsibilities will include:

• Leading the reactive drainage function, supported by experienced team members.
• Investigating drainage and flooding issues affecting highways and land drainage networks.
• Undertaking site inspections and providing technical assessments.
• Liaising with framework contractors and specialist consultants.
• Recommending repairs, improvements, and drainage enhancement works.
• Producing work orders and contract specifications for drainage schemes.
• Supervising contractors and ensuring works are completed in accordance with specifications and contractual requirements.-

About You To be considered, you should possess:

• A minimum of 10 years'' drainage engineering experience.
• HNC/HND, ONC, or equivalent Level 5 qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Extensive experience investigating and resolving complex drainage and flooding issues.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
• The ability to work effectively with residents, contractors, councillors, and internal colleagues.
• A practical and proactive approach to resolving reactive drainage challenges.-

Additional Information Due to the reactive nature of the role, candidates should ideally be located within reasonable travelling distance of Wokingham and be able to attend site visits at short notice. Access to a vehicle for business use would be advantageous. A proportion of home working can be accommodated where operationally appropriate.-
Flexibility is required, as occasional emergency responses outside normal working hours may be necessary.-
Rate -40-45 per hour (Inside IR35 subject to determination)
