My client is one of the largest financial institutions headquartered in Japan, with an established presence across all consumer and corporate banking businesses. Through its subsidiaries and affiliates, they offer a diverse range of financial services, including commercial banking, leasing, securities, credit card, consumer finance and other services.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Credit Risk Analyst to join the Credit Supervision Group on a maternity cover contract to July 2027 with potential to extend. You will be in the office a minimum of 2 days a week which must include Thursdays, standard office hours Monday to Friday.

A second line of defence role providing credit risk management / oversight of new credit transactions in designated sectors within the Financial Institutions (FI) and Sovereign credit portfolio across EMEA including both Developed and Emerging Markets (CIS, Middle East and Africa).

Essentials of the Role

  • Providing critical challenge and detailed review on credit applications submitted by Front Office and providing recommendations to Approvers within Credit Department (CD), EMEA or Tokyo HQ.
  • Provide the effective credit management of client relationships and exposures within designated sectors within the FI credit portfolio across EMEA.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Exercise strong risk assessment methodology toward new transactions and management of a portfolio of FI clients (including Problem Assets), across a broad variety of sectors, geographies, and asset / product types, seeking guidance from more senior staff / management as appropriate.
  • Working as a trusted partner with Front Office deal teams to ensure delivery to clients whilst maintaining high credit quality. Through good engagement with line management, articulate CD risk perception and appetite for a transaction in line with bank policy and procedures, manage the interaction and communication with front office teams, attend meetings with clients, with input from more senior colleagues where necessary.
  • Experience and capability to take a standard FI transaction from inception to approval, with some guidance and supervision where appropriate.
  • Judgement to elevate issues to more senior colleagues where collaborating with other risk and compliance functions is appropriate to ensure enterprise wide view of risk is considered.
  • Flexibility to work to tight deadlines under pressure (including ability to work outside of contracted hours from time to time /as workflow demands), to give prompt responses to customers.
  • Develop relationships within the team: seek guidance and advice from colleagues; express well-reasoned arguments and influence senior management.
  • Assist other members of the team by proactively taking work in a manner which ensures work is fairly distributed, particularly in times of strong work flow / staff absences.
  • Willingness / flexibility to be involved in ad hoc projects supporting the strategy of FI credit team and the wider department /institution.
  • Draw on own expertise and professional knowledge and that of colleagues to assist in developing innovative solutions /improvements to status quo.

Experience & Skills Required

  • Experience in a credit management role within a bank or rating agencies.
  • Good working knowledge of Banks and Sovereigns.
  • Experience preparing credit applications, annual reviews, and limit recommendations.
  • Strong financial statement analysis skills.
  • Ability to assess developed and emerging market counterparties.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of IT literacy, strong written and verbal communication skills (supporting preparation of succinct and focused credit papers), and strong interpersonal skills (supporting collaboration / teamwork).
  • Degree level education and / or relevant professional qualifications (eg: ACA, ACCA, ACT, CFA), and a track record of continued learning and development.
