Complex Care Support Worker

Job Purpose

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Complex Care Support Worker to provide high-quality, person-centred care to a male service user living with a spinal cord injury. The successful candidate will support the service user in his own home, ensuring his safety, comfort, dignity, and independence while managing complex clinical needs, including total parenteral nutrition (TPN), tracheostomy care, and ventilator support.

The positions within the care package can allow for full time and part time working patterns and day and nights shifts are available, working 12 hours each shift. You will also be paid weekly and given your rota 3 months in advance. You will also be working with a Complex Care Nurse on every shift.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver person-centred care in accordance with the individual care plan and risk assessments.
  • Provide support with all activities of daily living, including personal care, hygiene, dressing, mobility, and positioning.
  • Monitor and manage the service user’s clinical needs, including:
  • Administration and monitoring of Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).
  • Tracheostomy care and suctioning as required.
  • Ventilator management and observation.
  • Monitoring vital signs and recognising signs of deterioration.
  • Support with medication administration in line with company policies and clinical protocols.
  • Assist with pressure area care and repositioning to prevent skin breakdown.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of care provided, observations, and any changes in the service user’s condition.
  • Communicate effectively with family members, multidisciplinary teams, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure all medical equipment is used safely and correctly and report any faults or concerns promptly.
  • Promote the service user’s independence, dignity, and choice at all times.
  • Provide emotional support and companionship to the service user and their family.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Attend training sessions, team meetings, and clinical competency assessments as required.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience working in a complex care or healthcare setting.
  • Experience supporting individuals with spinal cord injuries.
  • Competency in tracheostomy care and suctioning.
  • Experience in ventilator management.
  • Training and competency in administering and monitoring TPN.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • A compassionate, patient, and professional approach to care.
  • Flexibility to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and nights where required.

Desirable Requirements

  • NVQ Level 2 or Level 3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
  • Experience working in home care or community settings.
  • Manual handling training.
  • Basic Life Support and emergency response training.
  • Previous experience with Spinal Injuries
