The foundation was the vision of the academic Amy Buller, whose pioneering work in trying to understand the rise of National Socialism in Germany during the 1930s and its impact on society - especially young people - was presented in her 1943 book Darknessover Germany. Her insights came to the attention of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (The Queen Mother), who shared her conviction that Britain needed a place of dialogue, understanding, and renewal.
