Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist

Overview

An opportunity has arisen for clinical leadership in Speech and Language Therapy for Surgery and Critical Care services within the York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.As a clinical lead, you will work closely with speech and language therapists and multi-professional colleagues across the Trust to ensure high quality speech and language care is provided for all patients in the service. You will have the opportunity to influence changes in service delivery, working effectively in smaller teams to lead improvement and innovation across different pathways. This role includes leading clinical transformation and improvement projects across clinical areas and opportunities to engage in research, present your work and lecture in your clinical areas of expertise. You will support the learning and development of other speech and language therapists and multi-professional colleagues through training, supervision, reflective practice and other evidence based approaches to adult learning. You will join a friendly team of over 20 speech and language therapists, primarily based at York Hospital with regular travel to Scarborough and other Trust localities.

Main duties of the job

You will be part of a supportive senior Speech and Language leadership team, including other Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapists, a Team Manager, and Senior Operational Manager and Speech and Language Therapy Professional Lead. You will provide clinical leadership for a team that includes registered speech and language therapists, assistant practitioners and support workers. Excellent team working and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to work autonomously to assess and manage a caseload of complex patients. You will demonstrate leadership capabilities beyond your clinical area, be resilient, manage and prioritise your caseload, support the work and development of the team, manage conflicting demands, and propose solutions to complex problems.

About the department

The Speech and Language Therapy department provides clinical inpatient and outpatient services to a variety of specialties, including Critical Care, Voice and ENT and Head and Neck Oncology. The department trains Speech and Language Therapy students and staff are involved in delivering rolling training programmes for other health care professionals across the Trust, relating to eating, drinking and communication.

Qualifications and Experience

EssentialHCPC Registered Speech and Language TherapistPost graduate qualification relevant to role and clinical specialtyEvidence of relevant structured CPD activitiesExperience in specialist role, including management of a range of specialist conditions, with evidence of supervisionAbility to lead and act as an authority on the management of complex clinical presentations in the specialist areaSubstantial experience of assessment and provision of specialist interventions including AAC and dysphagia care where appropriateSignificant experience of delivering clinical treatment within the specialist areaIn-depth understanding of current issues in health care Standards of Professional PracticeDesirableExperience identifying and using outcome measures to evaluate clinical treatmentAdvanced specialist clinical skills within the relevant areaExperience training/supporting others (including students) within the specialist areaEvidence of leading delivery of audit/research projectsPractice placement supervisor qualificationMaster’s level study within the relevant area of practice or research and evidence-based practice
