Location: East Sussex, South of England
Type: Permanent - working arrangements to be confirmed

About the Role
Our client is looking for a Civil Engineer with approximately 3-6 years of relevant experience to join its growing design and project delivery team.

This is an opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of civil engineering, surface-water drainage and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) projects, combining sound engineering principles with landscape design, green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.

You will contribute throughout the project lifecycle, from initial site assessments and feasibility studies through to technical design, stakeholder coordination and practical implementation.

Working alongside experienced engineering professionals and multidisciplinary teams, you will have the opportunity to develop your technical expertise, take increasing ownership of projects and build your client relationship and project management skills.

About the Client
Our client is a growing environmental and engineering business specialising in sustainable surface-water management, SuDS and nature-based solutions.

The business takes a different approach to conventional drainage design, integrating engineering with landscape design and green infrastructure to deliver more sustainable outcomes.

With continued growth and increasing demand for its services, our client is expanding its team and offers the opportunity to contribute to a developing business focused on innovative and practical engineering solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Undertake civil engineering and surface-water drainage design, incorporating SuDS and nature-based solutions.
  • Carry out site visits to assess existing conditions, drainage constraints and opportunities for improvement.
  • Complete hydraulic calculations and, where appropriate, drainage modelling.
  • Assess drainage requirements, site levels, attenuation, flow controls, exceedance routes and wider site constraints.
  • Prepare, review and coordinate engineering designs, technical drawings and supporting calculations.
  • Collaborate with landscape architects, environmental specialists, highways professionals and other design disciplines.
  • Liaise with clients, developers, local authorities, water companies, contractors and other project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate surveys, specialist consultants and external design resources where required.
  • Manage project activities, resolve technical issues and help ensure delivery to the required quality, programme and budget.
  • Contribute to project proposals, client discussions and opportunities to support existing and prospective clients.
  • Support projects from design through to practical delivery, maintaining ownership of requirements and outcomes.
  • What Our Client is Looking For
  • Our client is seeking a proactive Civil Engineer with a sound understanding of engineering principles and approximately 3-6 years of relevant experience in drainage, infrastructure or surface-water management.

Relevant experience may include:

  • Civil engineering or infrastructure design.
  • Surface-water drainage and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).
  • Hydraulic calculations, attenuation assessments or drainage modelling.
  • Site assessments, feasibility studies and drainage strategies.
  • Highways drainage, site levels, flow controls and exceedance routing.
  • Technical drawings, design coordination and design review.
  • Working collaboratively with clients and multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Experience using InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage or equivalent drainage design and hydraulic modelling software would be advantageous.

You will also bring:

  • A practical, proactive approach to engineering and project delivery.
  • The ability to assess site conditions and develop solutions that work in practice.
  • Strong communication and collaborative working skills.
  • The ability to take ownership of your work and manage competing priorities.
  • An interest in developing project management, commercial awareness and client relationship skills.
  • Chartered status is not essential. Applications are welcomed from engineers working towards professional qualifications through the ICE, CIWEM or another relevant professional institution.

Our client values engineering fundamentals, practical judgement and ambition, rather than a rigid set of criteria.

What Our Client Offers:

  • A varied portfolio of civil engineering, drainage and SuDS projects.
  • The opportunity to work alongside experienced engineering professionals and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Exposure to sustainable drainage, green infrastructure and nature-based solutions.
  • Opportunities to develop technical expertise and take greater ownership of projects.
  • Scope to develop project management and client relationship skills.
  • The opportunity to contribute to a growing business and support its future development.
  • Specific benefits, pension arrangements and other employment package details have not been provided.

Eligibility

  • Approximately 3-6 years of relevant civil engineering experience.
  • A sound understanding of civil engineering principles.
  • Relevant experience in drainage, infrastructure or surface-water management.
  • Experience with InfoDrainage, MicroDrainage or equivalent software is advantageous, rather than essential.
  • Chartered status is not required.
  • Professional development towards ICE, CIWEM or another relevant qualification is welcomed.
  • Opportunity for Growth
  • This role offers the opportunity to broaden your experience beyond purely technical design and develop into a key member of a growing engineering team.

You will have scope to take increasing responsibility for project delivery, client relationships and coordination, while developing your technical expertise across sustainable drainage and nature-based solutions.

For an engineer looking to combine practical engineering with more sustainable approaches to drainage and infrastructure, this is an opportunity to build a rewarding longer-term career.
