Centre Assistant – Part-Time
Location: Newport Wetlands
Salary: £12.60 - £13.45 Per Hour
Benefits: Pension Scheme, Life Assurance Scheme, 26 days' Annual Leave

Two permanent, part-time (variable hours) positions are available:

Minimum hours 9 per week rising to 16 per week during peak periods

Minimum hours 13 per week rising to 16 per week during peak periods

There will be the opportunity to pick up extra hours to cover annual leave and sickness as required.

Our busy catering operation at Newport Wetlands Reserve is looking for a Centre Assistant to join our Food and Beverage team. We are looking for an individual who is able to deliver the highest standards and customer care and assist with the day-to-day running of the café operation, in line with set RSPB procedures and routines.

Newport Wetlands is a special area for wildlife, lying between the Severn estuary and the river Usk. It is one of the most important areas of wetland habitat in Wales, providing a haven for wildlife on the edge of the city and is a popular visitor attraction.  The RSPB manage the visitor facilities which includes the café with lovely reserve views.

Our work in the café and visitor centre is planned via the use of rotas and will include weekend and bank holiday working. Full induction and training will be provided, with opportunities to learn about the running of a busy café, visitor centre and nature reserve operation.

You will be able to communicate well with our visitors and offer excellent levels of customer care. Duties will include working in our café, serving customers food and drink, operating the till, preparing food, as well as maintaining the appearance of the café and stock levels, processing deliveries and following hygiene and health and safety regulations.

You will need to be available to work during the day, weekends, and Bank Holiday working will also be essential.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Enthusiastic approach to work, High understanding of the principals of food hygiene;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work on own initiative;
  • Ability to manage and respond to customer needs and feedback;
  • Working in target driven/pressured environment;
  • Working on the till, card machine, cashing up;
  • Ability to work as part of a team.

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

  • Experience of working at a café/bar/pub;
  • Till operation and payment handling;
  • Knowledge of food and food service skills;
  • Computer skills.
