We are currently recruiting for an experienced CAD/CNC Design Engineer to join an established manufacturing business based in Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity for a technically capable CAD/CNC Design Engineer with a background in sheet-metal manufacturing to take on a varied, hands-on role where your design and programming expertise will have a direct impact on production.
Working across both the engineering and manufacturing functions, you will be responsible for producing detailed CAD drawings, developing CNC programmes and supporting the production of sheet-metal components from initial design through to manufacture.
The role would suit someone who enjoys being hands-on, solving problems and finding practical ways to improve manufacturing processes.
What You''ll Be Doing
- Create accurate engineering and manufacturing drawings using AutoCAD.
- Develop and modify CNC programmes using Radan and Salvagnini software.
- Programme Salvagnini machinery for sheet-metal cutting and forming.
- Design and develop sheet-metal components and manufacturing solutions.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances and customer requirements.
- Produce production-ready CAD files, drawings and CNC programmes.
- Optimise nesting and material utilisation to reduce waste and manufacturing costs.
- Work closely with production, engineering, quality and planning teams.
- Provide technical support to machine operators and production staff.
- Identify and resolve CAD, programming and manufacturing issues.
- Review existing programmes and identify opportunities to improve efficiency, quality and cycle times.
- Support prototypes, trials, new product introduction and process development.
- Maintain accurate and controlled drawings, programmes and technical documentation.
- Contribute to continuous improvement and manufacturing efficiency projects.
We are looking for an experienced CAD/CNC Design Engineer who understands both the design and practical manufacturing sides of sheet metal.
You will ideally have:
- Previous experience within a sheet-metal manufacturing environment.
- Strong AutoCAD experience.
- Practical experience using Radan CAD/CAM.
- Experience programming Salvagnini machinery.
- A good understanding of sheet-metal manufacturing processes.
- Experience with laser cutting, punching, folding or forming.
- The ability to confidently read and interpret engineering drawings.
- Good knowledge of materials, tolerances and manufacturing requirements.
- Strong technical and practical problem-solving skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Good IT and software skills.
Experience with any of the following would be advantageous:
- Autodesk Inventor.
- 3D sheet-metal design and modelling.
- CNC laser cutting, punching or press-brake programming.
- Salvagnini automation and manufacturing systems.
- Sheet-metal tooling and forming.
- GD&T and engineering tolerances.
- CNC nesting and material optimisation.
- ISO 9001 manufacturing environments.
- CNC machine-setting or shop-floor production.
- Automotive, aerospace or general engineering manufacturing.
Technical ability is important, but we''re also looking for someone with the right attitude.
You''ll be a self-motivated, practical and proactive individual who is happy to get involved and take ownership of your work.
You will be:
- Hands-on and comfortable working between the engineering office and production floor.
- A natural problem solver who looks for solutions rather than problems.
- Flexible and able to adapt to changing production requirements.
- Able to work independently while contributing effectively to a wider team.
- Detail-focused and committed to producing accurate work.
- Commercially aware, with an understanding of productivity, waste, cost and delivery.
- Keen to learn and develop your knowledge of new technologies and manufacturing systems.
This is a great opportunity to join a manufacturing environment where your CAD, CNC programming and sheet-metal expertise will be genuinely valued.
You''ll have the opportunity to work across the full manufacturing process, from design and programming through to production, while contributing ideas and improvements that can make a real difference to efficiency and output.
