A vacancy at Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust within the Children and Young People’s division (formerly Forward Thinking Birmingham). The division provides dedicated mental health in-reach support into the city’s Youth Justice Service to support children and young people who may have a mental health need. Birmingham Youth Justice Service is one of the largest in the country.We recognise that many children in this service have limited access to mental health services, are often marginalised, and face multiple disadvantages with high rates of disproportionality. The role of the Specialist Practitioner is to overcome these barriers and systemic challenges by working with children, young people, and the surrounding systems to understand their needs and next steps, enabling timely support and access to services. The aim is to contribute to the principal objective of the Youth Justice Service to prevent offending by ensuring physical, emotional, and mental health needs are addressed as a core factor in all assessments and interventions undertaken by the Youth Justice Service (YJS).Role and responsibilities
The YJS Specialist Practitioner will ensure that a young person in contact with the youth justice system has the same access to a comprehensive health service as any other young person in the general population. The post holder will deliver health services to children and young people, including direct assessment, early intervention and referral, and will offer advice and consultation on children and young people’s healthcare to colleagues. The post holder will be responsible for the management and coordination of healthcare needs of young people within the criminal justice system, working within a multi-agency environment with a wide range of professionals across all agencies to meet physical, emotional and mental health needs. This will be delivered through a model of consultation and direct service delivery.Key working relationships
