What you’ll be doing

Reporting to the Head of Technology we are looking for an experienced contract DBA to join our team and help optimise performance across a mission-critical, mature software platform. This is a hands-on role focused on diagnosing and fixing performance bottlenecks and improving schema design.

Analyse and optimise slow-running queries across a complex, highly used production database.

Review and improve indexing strategy, eliminating redundancy and ensuring coverage for critical workloads.

Work with engineering teams to implement pagination, caching strategies, and data access best practices.

Redesign and tune schemas where appropriate to improve scalability and maintainability.

Support and optimise the AWS RDS MySQL 5 ? 8 upgrade process, ensuring minimal downtime and performance gains.

Identify and eliminate resource bottlenecks, reducing unnecessary cloud consumption.

Create repeatable frameworks for query tuning and performance monitoring.

Collaborate with product and engineering teams to ensure changes align with business priorities.

Document improvements and create guidelines for future maintainability.

An experienced DBA with deep expertise in AWS RDS and MySQL.

Proven track record of query optimisation, schema tuning, and indexing strategies in production environments.

Familiarity with cloud-native databases and performance optimisation in AWS environments.

Strong understanding of database monitoring, profiling, and troubleshooting tools.

Hands-on experience with database migrations and upgrades at scale.

Comfortable working with large, legacy codebases and finding pragmatic solutions.

Collaborative communicator able to work closely with engineers, product managers, and cloud ops teams.

Able to deliver measurable performance improvements in a short timeframe.

Contract-friendly mindset: autonomous, delivery-focused, and outcome-oriented.

What your impact and success looks likeAs a DBA, we expect your success and impact over the stages of your contract with us to look something like this:

Within 1 month:

Have a clear understanding of the database landscape, key bottlenecks, and query hotspots.

Deliver an audit report highlighting priority optimisations and quick wins.

Implement initial tuning of critical queries and indexes for immediate performance impact.

Build working relationships with engineers and key stakeholders.

Within 3 months:

Lead and complete the AWS RDS MySQL 5 ? 8

migration , ensuring smooth transition.

Optimise core query paths and schemas, delivering measurable improvements to user experience.

Establish monitoring and alerting to track ongoing performance.

Document best practices and provide knowledge transfer to engineering teams.

Within 6 months:

Achieve significant reduction in database-related cloud costs through tuning and optimisation.

Deliver a substantially faster, more reliable user experience for customers.

Leave a maintainable, scalable database environment that engineering teams can continue to evolve.

Provide final knowledge transfer and documentation to ensure long-term sustainability.
