Assistant Quantity Surveyor

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join an established construction business based in Birmingham.

The role would suit an ambitious Assistant Quantity Surveyor looking to develop their commercial experience within a supportive and forward-thinking environment, working alongside experienced commercial professionals across a range of construction projects.

This is a particularly attractive opportunity for someone looking for genuine flexibility, with the position offering 4 days working from home and just 1 day per week in the Birmingham office of on site.

The Role

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team across the full project lifecycle, gaining exposure to pre-contract and post-contract commercial activities.

Key Responsibilities

• Supporting the Quantity Surveyor with the commercial management of construction projects
• Assisting with cost planning, budgets and financial reporting
• Preparing and reviewing valuations, applications for payment and payment notices
• Assisting with subcontractor procurement and tender analysis
• Obtaining and analysing quotations from subcontractors and suppliers
• Supporting the preparation and assessment of variations
• Assisting with cost reporting and forecasting
• Monitoring project costs against budgets
• Supporting the preparation of monthly commercial reports
• Assisting with subcontractor accounts and final accounts
• Maintaining accurate commercial records and project documentation
• Working closely with project teams to identify commercial risks and opportunities
• Building strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers

Education, skills and experience

• A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management or Construction
• Previous experience working within a Quantity Surveying / Commercial environment
• Some experience within a main contractor, subcontractor or construction consultancy environment
• Good understanding of construction processes and commercial principles
• Strong numerical and analytical skills
• Excellent attention to detail and organisation
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
• A proactive approach with a genuine desire to develop within the commercial function
• Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel
• The ability to work independently while also contributing effectively to a wider team
